Responsibilities of this exciting leadership role include:

  • Develop, lead, and implement extramurally supported prospective, interventional, out-of-hospital and in-hospital, Emergency Medicine-related clinical trials for the Resuscitation Research Center.
  • Design and grow clinical and translational collaborative research across Milwaukee County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Department of Emergency Medicine, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the wider community.
  • Maintain a personal portfolio of extramurally funded research.
  • Provide mentorship to faculty and trainees seeking to develop research-focused careers
  • Design, implement, and evaluate focused research training and mentorship programs, e.g. T32 and research fellowship programs, in partnership with the Vice Chair for Research and Scholarship in the Department of Emergency Medicine and other stakeholders.
  • Represent the Department internally and externally with respect to relevant Emergency Medicine-related out-of-hospital and in-hospital clinical, translational, and interventional research.
  • Serve as a leader on key research and scholarship-related committees.

Resuscitation Research Center

The Resuscitation Research Center is a departmental, faculty-run center with a storied 25-year history of conducting innovative and impactful research focused largely on improving out-of-hospital and in-hospital emergency cardiac care, clinical practice, and patient outcomes. Over its history the RRC has been extremely successful in conducting grant and industry-sponsored research. The RRC is also a regional site for two NIH funded research networks: the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium and the Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials Network and is also a site in the Strategies to Innovate Emergency Care Clinical Trials Network (SIREN) and a hub for the Early Phase Pain Investigation Clinical Network (EPPIC-Net).

The RRC has been led by Thomas P. Aufderheide, MD, Hon FACC, FAHA, FACEP, MS, Professor of Emergency Medicine, Associate Chair of Research Affairs, and Director of the RRC, at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is a nationally and internationally recognized researcher in the field of emergency cardiac care, whose scholarly achievements have had a significant impact on the practice of emergency medicine. He conceived of and pioneered use of out-of-hospital 12-lead ECGs for rapid identification and treatment of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and unstable angina, now an internationally recommended practice that forms the basis for STEMI programs in most communities throughout the world. His discoveries include the detrimental effects of many previously common cardiac arrest resuscitation practices, including hyperventilation during CPR, incomplete chest recoil, and variable delivery of CPR quality. In 2009, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) for his significant contributions to the fields of medicine and public health.

RRC staff includes 1 research manager and 4 clinical research coordinators, as well as other departmental support for administrative needs, grant coordination, finance oversight and accounting. The RRC team is one of only a few in the country that can support 24/7/365 clinical trial subject enrollment and protocol implementation. A large dedicated clinical research space is located nearly adjacent to the Froedtert Hospital Emergency Department. Additional research space is accessible through the RRC’s relationship with Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and the Adult Translational Research Unit (TRU). Through highly collaborative existing relationships, there is also an opportunity to work in partnership with all departments/specialties across the system.
