SUMMARY:
The Lab Lead Technologist functions under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor. In the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Lab Lead Technologist supervises the daily activities in the Lab. The Lab Lead Technologist is responsible for providing technical guidance in all aspects of laboratory department and performing various medical laboratory tests to obtain data for use by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases, syndromes, and disorders. The Lab Lead Technologist is expected to provide excellent customer service and adhere to established Laboratory, MCH, and Code of Conduct policies and procedures at all times. The Lab Lead Technologist works in collaboration with all lab staffs, provides inputs in staff development, participates in team building, and strives to gain trust from clinical personnel, physician and management.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provides Technical Leadership and functions as a backup for any Lab team member.
- Utilizes the Laboratory Information System to enter test orders, report results, look up results, verify specimen receipt time and date, and check pending tests.
- Performs waived, moderately complex, and highly complex medical laboratory tests and examinations.
- Maintains detailed records of tests, quality control, calibration, and maintenance performed.
- Sets up equipment and instruments required for laboratory testing.
- Operates manual and automatic laboratory equipment and instruments to perform clinical laboratory tests for qualitative and quantitative analyses of specimens.
- Calibrates and performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Prepares chemicals, reagents, and solutions required for laboratory testing.
- Provides training to students, new employees, and fellow employees.
- Ensures equipment and instruments are maintained and calibrated properly in his assigned department(s).
- Assists Laboratory Supervisor in handling procedural and technical Laboratory problems immediately, assists in analyzing the root cause of the problems, and assists in incorporating procedural changes to prevent the problems from occurring again.
- Stays abreast of the latest technical developments and assists in incorporating them during the development of Laboratory procedures and techniques. Develops new procedures in his assigned laboratory department as needed.
- Maintains par level supply inventory in his assigned department.
- Understands and ensures his assigned department(s) complies with all Laboratory Quality Control (Q.C.), Quality Management (Q.M.), and Performance Improvement (P.I.) policies.
- Monitors Quality Control shifts and trends and takes appropriate actions when necessary.
- Complies with all regulatory and safety requirements (CLIA, CAP, TDH, and OSHA).
- Performs reviews of all CAP Proficiency Testing (PT) surveys before submission to the CAP.
- Assists the Laboratory Supervisor in monitoring the Quality Control, Proficiency Testing, and Quality Assurance Programs as defined for the Clinic's Laboratory Department.
- Reviews annually, and consistently adheres to, the Laboratory Department policies and procedures that pertain to his responsibilities.
- Adheres to all Clinic policies and procedures, including incident reporting, Safety, Compliance, and the Code of Conduct.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Minimum of an Associate's of Science or related degree required.
Experience: 5 years full-time experience in a clinical laboratory setting required.
Certification: M.T., M.L.T., or equivalent required.
Other:
- Must be able to type a minimum of 20 words per minute.
- Must be able to frequently use a computer and computer printer.
- Must have legible penmanship.
- Must be able to frequently move throughout the Laboratory to perform duties.
- Must be able to occasionally remain in a stationary position.
- Must be able to occasionally move supplies and boxes weighing up to 20 pounds throughout the Clinic.
- Must be able to perform repetitive motions of various types and degrees utilizing the arms and hands.
- Must be able to demonstrate required dexterity to complete laboratory tasks.
- Must be able to occasionally position himself to maintain supplies and equipment, including under desks and counters.
