Assistant Director of Nursing

The Assistant Director of Nursing assists the Director of Nursing (DON) with the planning, coordination, leading, controlling and evaluation of home health services. S/he fosters public relations for the company by consulting and planning with health care facilities regarding staffing needs and communicates the concept of quality client care to the general community. S/he interprets service needs to the Director of Nursing (DON) and acts as a client services administrative liaison. 

Responsibilities 

1. May serve as the Alternate Supervising Nurse of the home health department and assesses appropriate staff supervision during all service hours. 
2. Assists the Director of Nursing in Representing the Agency/Department in audits of regulatory agencies. 
3. Assist in overseeing the implementation and evaluation of client care services inclusive of regulatory licensure and certification criteria and accreditation standards. 
4. Consults, plans and works with DON in process formulation and implementation including assessing adequate and qualified staffing. 
5. Coordinates with other program areas and senior management as appropriate according to the organizational structure. 
6. Assist the DON in the implementation of service goals and objectives. 
7. Assists the DON in keeping home health personnel up to date with clinical information and practices through staff development to include new hire orientation, yearly in-service educations, and continuing education. 
8. Actively develops and pursues referral sources, as well as facilitates on-going relationships with various medical and health communities.  
9. Assists the DON with implementing standards that ensure safe and effective services to patients and families to include timely admission of all referrals as per the conditions of participation and regulations of home health services 
10. Assist the DON to ensure reassessment of a patient’s needs is performed and meets criteria for continued home health services by an appropriate health care professional when: there is a significant health status change in the clients' condition, at the Physician's request, after hospitalization.
11. Assist the DON for assuring all physician orders are implemented appropriately and timely. 
12. Assist the DON in consulting with physicians in matters relating to patient care services. 
13. Assist the DON Responsible for reviewing and notification of appropriate lab results to physician and care team.  
14. Responsible in assisting the DON in meeting Hemoglobin A1C requirements.  
15. Assist in the final review of OASIS Assessment and plan of care for accuracy and reimbursement purposes. 
16. Ensures effective and efficient client care documentation system to support medical necessity and homebound status of patients. 
17. Assists in the evaluation of community needs and plans programs and services to meet with identified needs. 
18. Consults with supervisors and staff, individually or in groups, regarding patients and/or families. 
19. Assist the DON as liaison with Staff Development for program areas. 
20. Assists the DON to oversee the QAPI program to assure that all components are completed accurately and timely in accordance with QAPI Policy and Procedures manual.  
21. Participates with other health, civic, education and professional groups as directed by the DOS/Administrator. 
22. Serves on Professional Advisory Committee and periodically reviews policies relevant to patient care. Assist in conducting case conferences as directed by DON. 
23. Review and implement the agency emergency preparedness needs.  
24. Participates in local, state, and national meeting and conventions when directed. 
25. Responsible for assisting the DON with orientation and training of field personnel.  
26. Keeps current on local area issues and assists in organizing, participating in agency events, and/or community awareness of services, as directed by the DON. 
27. May participate on the on-call rotation/duties as defined by the on-call policy and as directed by the DON. 
28. Assist the DON in preparing and reviewing any claims requested by payers. 
29. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing. 

Driving & Other Requirements 

Must have and maintain a valid state driver license, have a registered and reliable vehicle that meets state law standards, and meets the insurance standards of Company. Position requires travel between company sites as well as the community. Traveling by car or airplanes to local or out-of-town meetings, seminars, and conferences. 

Education, Experience & Job Requirements 

This position requires at least the following minimum requirements:  

• Requires a minimum a Licensed Vocational Nurse with a valid license in the state(s) practicing; a Registered Nurse is preferred with a current and valid license in the state (s) practicing. 

•  Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred but not required.   

• Experience as a home health and/or hospice professional with training and experience in health service administration. 

• Preferred but not required at least one (1) year of supervisory or administrative experience in home health care, hospice or related health programs.   

• Preferred but not required one (1) year of experience in personnel management, including hiring, supervision, evaluation and benefits administration.  

• Current CPR Certification. 

• Proven skills in business and financial management preferred.  

• Good nursing judgment. 

• Must be proficient in clinical nursing skills and be able to train/teach field staff.  

• Responsible for ensuring that all agency employees review and comply with federal, state, and/or accreditation regulations, and agency policies.  

• Demonstrated ability to work with patients and employees.  

• Demonstrated ability to work in a proactively diverse and inclusive organization.  

• Must have excellent written communication by writing clearly and informatively, edits work and able to read and interpret legal written information.  

• Demonstrates accuracy, thoroughness and follows through on commitments.

• Must be able to read, write and speak English. Spanish is preferred.

• Proven ability to cope with conflict, stress and crisis situations.
