Job Title:                     Maintenance Specialist - Heating and Air Conditioning

Supervisor:                  Director of Support Services

Classification:              Classified

FLSA Status:                Nonexempt

Summary:  Performs skilled work as a journeyman craftsman in maintaining, constructing, and repairing District buildings and equipment.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and maintain ventilating systems to ensure proper heat and airflow and check room temperature, service fans, compressors, oiling pumps, greasing, packing, and cleaning as necessary.
  • Makes and installs filters.
  • Performs pipefitting, welding, metal fabrication, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing work.
  • Performs calibration of controls and adjustment and replacement of parts.
  • Tests boiler water and recommends chemical additives.
  • Maintains and operates air conditioning units.
  • Estimates necessary materials and submits requisitions.
  • Maintains records of preventative maintenance.
  • Complies with all applicable standards, policies, and procedures, including safety procedures and maintaining a clean work area.
  • Understands and complies with safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintains competency in all position responsibilities.
  • Complies with all safety and work rules, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for proper utilization, operation, and maintenance of all department resources.
  • Provides support to other positions as needed.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as appropriate with little or no supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Marginal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May work as a laborer in support of journeymen in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler, and other trade positions in the District, including grounds.
  • Performs minor vehicle repairs.
  • Performs full-scale asbestos abatement, removal, and repair.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the supervision of employee helpers.
  • All Medford School District employees supervise students and maintain a safe environment.

Education and/or Experience:  High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); one-year minimum of journeyman level experience as a skilled tradesman; completion of a recognized apprenticeship training period; and possession of appropriate trade licenses from the State of Oregon. 

 

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact appropriately with teachers, staff, community members, students, and regulatory and governmental agencies. Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; Contributes to building a positive team spirit.

 

Language Skills: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing fluently in English. Preference may be given to applicants fluent in English and Spanish. Ability to effectively present verbal information to students, parents, and other school staff in one-on-one and small-group situations. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

 

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry.

 

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

 

Computer Skills:  General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database e-mail, internet software, inventory software, and manufacturing software.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District, including valid driver's license, asbestos awareness training, and appropriate trade licenses issued by the State of Oregon.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must often stand, stoop, kneel, climb ladders, crouch, or crawl; occasionally sit, climb, balance, and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and sometimes more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, the ability to adjust focus, depth perception, and peripheral vision. Demonstrate strength and dexterity to operate hand and power tools. Must be able to speak clearly to be understood and identify and understand the speech of others—emotional stability to work effectively under pressure and control all aspects of the job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid weather conditions. Occasionally the employee must work in high, precarious places and around moving parts. The employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally high. The employee may be exposed to electrical shock and machinery vibration. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold conditions with the repair of refrigeration/freezer units. The employee may also work near natural gas.
