What are the responsibilities and job description for the MLT/MT position at Med-Lake Laboratory?
Position Summary
Perform, analyze, and interpret moderate to high complexity molecular laboratory assays (e.g. PCR, real‑time PCR, NGS, sequencing) on human specimens in a CLIA‑certified environment. Ensure test accuracy, compliance with regulatory and quality standards, maintenance of equipment, and oversight of molecular processes. Serve as a technical resource, train staff, troubleshoot issues, and support assay development.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute molecular assays: nucleic acid extraction, amplification, real-time PCR, sequencing, hybridization, and related methods.
- Assist validate new molecular assays, optimize protocols, and assist in method development.
- Perform quality control, proficiency testing, calibration, maintenance, and verification of instruments.
- Review and interpret results, flag anomalies, and collaborate with pathologists/physicians when needed.
- Troubleshoot assay failures, instrument problems, and deviations from expected performance.
- Ensure specimens are correctly processed, labeled, and documented.
- Maintain supplies, reagents, and inventory; order as needed.
- Document all work in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and follow good documentation practices.
- Train, mentor, and assess the competency of junior staff in molecular methods.
- Maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, OSHA, and any applicable state regulations.
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Certification as a Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist (e.g. ASCP, AMT) preferred.
- If your state requires licensure for molecular technologists, you must be eligible or hold a valid license.
Experience & Skills
- 2 years (or more, depending on level) of experience in a clinical molecular laboratory performing high complexity tests.
- Proficiency in nucleic acid extraction, PCR, qPCR, next-generation sequencing (NGS), or hybridization techniques.
- Strong understanding of molecular assay design, validation, and troubleshooting.
- Experience working with laboratory instrumentation, automation, and molecular platforms.
- Excellent attention to detail, strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Good communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, perform pipetting, lift ~25 lbs, and work in biosafety environments.
Work Schedule & Conditions
- Full-time (typically 40 hrs/week), may include rotational shifts, evenings, weekends, and on-call coverage.
- Work in a laboratory environment with exposure to biohazards, chemicals, and reagents.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required.

Pay: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
