Position Purpose:

The Math Intervention Specialist is responsible for supporting the academic progress and growth of middle school students by enhancing their mathematical skills and addressing areas of need identified by classroom teachers or administrators. This position includes providing direct small-group instruction, promoting math instruction, and improving student learning outcomes.


Essential Functions:

  • Curriculum and Instruction:
    Work with administrators and teachers to improve student achievement through the development and enhancement of instructional practices, including technology practices. Collaborate with teachers to ensure the math curriculum aligns with district goals and effectively addresses student needs. Create a supportive and inclusive environment for students requiring intervention. Provide individualized or small-group instruction to foster student engagement and participation. Address classroom behavior issues proactively to ensure a positive learning experience for all students.
  • Lesson Planning and Instructional Support:
    Assist in designing and implementing lesson plans that support the curriculum and address areas of need. Collaborate with teachers to co-plan and co-teach, ensuring lessons challenge students and encourage critical thinking.
  • Assessment and Data Analysis:
    Continuously assess student progress and adjust instructional methods to meet diverse learning needs. Analyze data to determine instructional levels and organize intervention groups, providing constructive feedback to students and staff. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, behavior, and academic achievement in accordance with district policies. Monitor classroom assessments for alignment to the VDOE curriculum framework, including cognitive levels of learning, and to the MCPS pacing guide.
  • Professional Development:
    Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with instructional strategies, educational research, and best practices. Share learned practices with colleagues to improve teaching effectiveness across the school.
  • Collaboration:
    Maintain clear communication with students, parents, and staff regarding student progress, intervention efforts, and academic goals. Ensure that feedback is regular and timely to support student growth. Support teachers in maintaining a productive and respectful learning environment during intervention sessions. Work collaboratively with individual teachers and teams of teachers to evaluate and assess curriculum, instructional strategies, and intervention techniques. Participate on the school improvement team and professional development initiatives to support overall student success. Maintain confidentiality regarding students, employees, and private information.
  • Standardized Testing:
    Assist in preparing students for standardized testing, ensuring the curriculum is adapted to meet testing requirements and maximize student achievement. Administer standardized tests according to district protocols.
  • Extracurricular Responsibilities:
    Participate in school-wide events and extracurricular activities as assigned.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Building Principal or school administration. Note: The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.
  • Supervise students during non-classroom activities such as lunch, recess, and field trips.
  • Coordinate with school staff to select and requisition instructional materials, textbooks, and supplies for intervention purposes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of math instructional strategies, remediation strategies, classroom management, and student assessment.
  • Knowledge of the school improvement process, the Virginia Standards of Learning, curriculum framework, and local pacing guides.
  • Expertise in differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of students, particularly those requiring intervention.
  • Proficiency in using data to drive instructional decisions and improve student performance.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to model best practices and provide professional development support to colleagues.

Educational Requirements and Certifications:

  • Certification/License: Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with a Math Specialist endorsement.
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Education or a relevant field. A Master's Degree with a Math Specialist endorsement is preferred but not required.
  • Experience: A minimum of five years of math teaching experience in a school setting is required.
    Equivalent experience and training may substitute for the above qualifications.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Ability to work in a standard classroom and school building environment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment, and manage classroom behavior effectively.
