About the Role: Maxwell Plumb Mechanical Group is seeking a genuinely experienced Commercial HVAC and Boiler Service Technician who can independently diagnose, maintain, and repair complex HVAC and heating systems. This is a senior, hands-on service position for a technician with 10 years of experience who can contribute immediately without constant supervision.
Most work is performed in multifamily buildings, high-rises, offices, retail properties, schools, and hospitals throughout New York City. This is not an apprentice, maintenance-only, or installation-only position.
What You’ll Do:
- Diagnose, service, maintain, and repair commercial HVAC and boiler systems.
- Work on Scotch Marine and firebox boilers, generally within the 100–600 size range.
- Troubleshoot burners, pumps, motors, safeties, electrical components, control valves, and operating controls.
- Service rooftop units, packaged units, split systems, mini-splits, and VRF systems.
- Diagnose heating and boiler controls, including Heat-Timer systems.
- Perform seasonal preventive maintenance and detailed equipment inspections.
- Work with steam coils, control valves, and related heating components.
- Read wiring diagrams and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control-related failures.
- Identify the underlying cause of equipment failures and complete lasting repairs.
- Communicate findings and repair recommendations to dispatch, management, customers, and building personnel.
- Contact manufacturer technical support when necessary and follow problems through to resolution.
- Complete accurate service documentation using company-provided technology.
- Maintain a clean, safe, stocked, and professional company vehicle.
- Participate in manufacturer-specific technical training and continuing education.
Key Requirements:
- Experience: 10 years of commercial HVAC and boiler service experience strongly preferred; five years of directly relevant experience is the absolute minimum.
- Boiler Skills: Proven ability to independently diagnose and repair commercial boilers, burners, pumps, controls, safeties, steam coils, and control valves.
- HVAC Skills: Strong experience troubleshooting rooftop units, packaged units, split systems, mini-splits, and VRF systems.
- Certification: EPA Universal Certification required.
- Safety Credentials: Applicable OSHA training and NYC FDNY Certificates of Fitness required.
- Troubleshooting: Ability to read schematics and independently diagnose mechanical, electrical, refrigeration-cycle, and control-related failures.
- Customer Service: Ability to communicate professionally with customers, residents, building personnel, dispatchers, and supervisors.
- On-Call: Willingness to participate in the mandatory on-call rotation and work additional hours during peak seasons.
- License: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Professionalism: Must be dependable, conscientious, team-oriented, receptive to feedback, and capable of working in occupied buildings.
Preferred (Not Required):
- 10–20 years of commercial HVAC and boiler service experience.
- Experience with Scotch Marine and firebox boilers.
- Experience with Heat-Timer boiler controls.
- Experience servicing multifamily buildings, high-rises, hospitals, schools, offices, and retail properties.
- Mitsubishi or other VRF manufacturer training.
- Gas-fitter license.
- Current F-60, G-60, and other applicable NYC FDNY Certificates of Fitness.
