Position Overview

The STEP (Starting Towards Excellence in Preschool) Teacher instructs, nurtures and encourages preschool children to increase their social competency, literacy and language skills. The STEP Teacher guides students toward the fulfillment of their potential for social, emotional, intellectual growth and maturation in preparation for kindergarten.

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:

• Implements by instruction and action the district’s and program’s philosophy of education, instructional goals and the objectives of the STEP adopted curriculum.
• Plans and implements appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities in collaboration with the assistant teacher, including determination of appropriate kind and level of materials, provide appropriate learning experiences, manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement, and utilize a variety of instructional materials and available multi-media and computer technology to enhance learning.
• Manages the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure that the environment is conducive to the learning process, and assist and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site.
• Continually assesses student achievement using anecdotal records, DECA, and PALS Pre-K© and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
• Communicates with parents through conferences and other means.
• Attends and participates in STEP staff meetings and professional development.
• Collaborates with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out schoolwide instructional or related activities as needed.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Below are the qualifications for this position:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college
• Must have or be eligible for a Collegiate Commonwealth of Virginia Professional License with an endorsement in Early/Primary Education Pre-K-3; Postgraduate Professional License preferred
• Experience working with preschool age children
• Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrates strong organizational skills
• Bilingual skills preferred
