The Dermatology Billing Specialist is responsible for accurately reprocessing medical claims for services rendered in a dermatology practice. This includes reviewing the coding submitted, resubmitting corrected insurance claims, and managing patient billing accounts. The specialist works closely with physicians, insurance companies, and patients to ensure timely payments and resolve billing issues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Medical Coding & Billing:
- Accurately code dermatology-related procedures, diagnoses, and treatments using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes.
- Prepare and submit insurance claims for dermatology services, ensuring compliance with payer guidelines.
- Follow up on outstanding claims, ensuring prompt reimbursement.
- Review and verify the accuracy of billing information, including patient demographics and insurance details.
- Accounts Receivable Management:
- Monitor aging accounts and follow up with patients and insurance companies to resolve outstanding balances.
- Work with patients to set up payment plans when necessary.
- Respond to billing inquiries from patients and provide explanations for charges or discrepancies.
- Compliance & Regulations:
- Ensure that all billing practices comply with federal, state, and insurance payer regulations.
- Stay up-to-date with changes in dermatology coding rules, payer policies, and billing practices.
- Financial Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of payments and adjustments in the billing system.
- Generate and review financial reports to track billing progress, unpaid claims, and other key metrics.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with dermatologists, medical office staff, and insurance representatives to resolve billing and coding issues.
- Coordinate with the front office to ensure accurate patient registration and insurance verification.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Certification in Medical Billing and Coding (such as CPC, CCS, or CCA) is preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in medical billing and coding, ideally within a dermatology practice or related healthcare setting.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems and practice management software.
- Knowledge of dermatology-specific procedures, treatments, and terminology.
- Strong understanding of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Familiarity with insurance guidelines, payer processes, and reimbursement procedures.
