What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Nurse, Outpatient - Center for Reconstructive Surgery position at MD Anderson Cancer Center?
The Center for Reconstructive Surgery at MD Anderson specializes in procedures that restore normal function and correct the physical changes caused by cancer-related treatments. The center takes a multidisciplinary approach to care and works closely with patients’ primary care teams. Our clinical faculty is expert in state-of-the-art microvascular surgical techniques, helping us achieve the best possible outcomes. In most cases, reconstruction is performed immediately after the tumor has been removed.
Our services include:
Pre-surgery consultation, evaluation and digital imaging
General plastic surgery reconstruction
Reconstructive surgery of defects in the head, neck, breast, torso and limbs
Complex microsurgery reconstruction
Complex wound management
Reconstruction for melanoma and skin cancer patients
The ideal candidate will have at least one year of Registered Nurse experience and demonstrate strong clinical assessment skills, sound clinical judgment and thrive in a collaborative environment, working seamlessly with Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), Patient Care Assistants (PCAs), and nursing peers to deliver exceptional care. Experience with Epic electronic health record systems is highly preferred.
The schedule will be Monday - Friday, 8am-4pm.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area.
Assesses patient’s needs for nursing care and other services, using clinical skills and visual, aural and analytical abilities.
Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient’s family to plan care and evaluate outcomes.
Integrates knowledge of age-specific care needs, principles of oncology practice, institutional goals and standards and current professional practice standards in providing care for patients.
Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies.
Participates in data collection for current studies.
Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies.
Assures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services.
Acts as a patient and family advocate to uphold patient rights.
Organizes and prioritizes work of patient care team; trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.

EDUCATION
- Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
- Preferred: Bachelor's Degree Nursing.
WORK EXPERIENCE
- Preferred: Minimum one year of RN experience.
- Preferred: Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Required: RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license. Upon Hire
- Required: BLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Upon Hire
- Required: ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support If working in the following department: ASC Post Anesthesia (600761). Upon Hire or PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support If working in the following departments: ASC Post Anesthesia (600761) or Pedi - Child & Adolescent Center (113200).
- Preferred: OCN - Oncology Nurse Certification Certification in specialty practice area. Upon Hire
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: All clinical nurses with less than one year of registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program.
