The McPherson Board of Public Utilities is currently accepting applications for the position of Water Technician in our Water Production department.

Position Summary:
This position is responsible for assisting in the operation, inspection, maintenance, and monitoring of BPU water system facilities and equipment to support the production and delivery of safe drinking water under the direction of their supervisor.

Education and Experience Requirements:
Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED. Previous experience in utilities, water treatment, water distribution, or a related field is preferred. Employees must possess or obtain a Class IV Water Supply System Operator Certificate within 4 years of employment and obtain and maintain a valid CDL with Hazmat endorsement, as well as obtain BPU forklift certification, within 6 months of employment.

On-Call & Residency Requirements:
This is an on-call position and is classified as an Essential Response Time position. Any person employed in this position shall reside within the established designated boundary as defined by the McPherson Board of Public Utilities Employee Residency Policy.

Wage Range:
$23.49 /hr. to $37.59 /hr. - Based on experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions:

  • Must possess or obtain a Class IV Water Supply System Operator Certificate within 4 years of employment and obtain and maintain a valid CDL with Hazmat endorsement, as well as obtain BPU forklift certification, within 6 months of employment.
  • Operates and maintains BPU water towers, wells, water treatment equipment, and cooling water systems.
  • Changes chlorine cylinders and inspects and maintains chlorine analyzers.
  • Assists in responding to water-related questions, concerns, and complaints from the public.
  • Understanding of applicable federal, state, and local sampling regulations.
  • Collects water samples and performs testing activities in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Monitors and records daily pump readings and other water production data.
  • Utilizes basic computer skills and provides plant process control oversight for water production.
  • Understands backflow prevention and assists with the maintenance of BPU’s backflow prevention program.
  • Applies foundational knowledge of chemistry and bacteriology in water treatment and distribution operations.
  • Interprets written instructions, blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and operational procedures.
  • Operates pumps, motors, hand tools, and other departmental equipment necessary to support water system operations and maintenance.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and handling equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and installing components in confined or awkward positions requiring bending, stooping, and twisting.
  • Safely performs duties involving hazardous water treatment chemicals, including proper chemical handling procedures and the use of required PPE such as respirators, chemical suits, gloves, hard hats, and safety eyewear.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Effectively communicates verbally and in writing, and establishes and maintains professional working relationships with coworkers, other departments, external contacts, and the public, as required by the position.
  • Responsible for obtaining, tracking, and maintaining all position-required certifications and licenses, including driver’s licenses and CDLs. Required CDLs must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of BPU policies, procedures, applicable terms and conditions, and required systems or software necessary to perform the position successfully.
  • Performs manual labor as required, including lifting and carrying heavy objects, bending, kneeling, climbing, and other physical activities associated with the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Operates departmental vehicles and equipment, including trucks, backhoes, and power tools, and ensures such operation is performed safely and in compliance with applicable laws and BPU policies.
  • Adheres to all BPU safety practices, policies, and procedures—including NESC standards, Lockout/Tagout, Arc Flash, Confined Space, Chlorine-Gas, and personal protective equipment (PPE), including flame-resistant (FR) apparel when working on or near energized electrical equipment.
  • Complies with departmental dress code and uniform requirements, including the appropriate wear of issued clothing (e.g., polos, t-shirts, and other assigned uniforms).
  • Acknowledges that adverse working conditions may exist, including exposure to heights, confined spaces, heavy machinery, noise, weather, and other physical or environmental conditions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including assisting other departments as needed.
