Position Overview
Reporting to the Head of Education, this position is responsible for developing and delivering high-quality programs for K-12 classroom teachers encouraging area educators to incorporate visual learning into their classroom curriculum; supervising and directing the activities of two direct reports, the Museum Educator, Community Programs and the Museum Educator, Public Programs; and facilitating the training for the established docent program.
Essential Job Functions
  • Facilitate existing professional development programs and workshops for K-12 classroom teachers, maintaining high standards of instructional quality and participant experience
  • Develop new teacher programs and modify existing offerings in collaboration with the Head of Education, with attention to curriculum standards alignment, educator needs, and museum content. This includes lesson plans, TEKS alignment, and CPE.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with school districts, curriculum coordinators, and other partners to ensure programs are relevant, accessible, and well-attended
  • Manage program logistics including scheduling, materials, and budget coordination
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and participant learning; use findings to inform ongoing improvements
Team Management
  • Directly manage two full-time educators, supporting their day-to-day work in program facilitation, community partner correspondence, logistics planning, and materials purchasing
  • Provide regular coaching, feedback, and professional development support to direct reports
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive team culture aligned with the museum's educational values
  • Lead team meetings in partnership with or in the absence of the Head of Education.
  • Partner with the Head of Education on hiring, onboarding, and performance processes as needed
Docent Training
  • Facilitate the museum's standardized docent training curriculum for a cohort of adult volunteer docents, primarily retired adults
  • Create a welcoming, engaging learning environment that honors docents' experience and expertise
  • Coordinate with relevant staff to ensure training sessions are logistically supported
Department Collaboration
  • Work closely with curatorial, marketing, visitor services, and development teams to align teacher programs with museum-wide priorities and exhibitions
  • Represent the Education department in cross-functional conversations as appropriate
  • Contribute to departmental planning, reporting, and grant-related documentation
Requirements
  • 3–5 years of experience in education, museum education, or a related field, with demonstrated experience facilitating professional learning for adult learners
  • Familiarity with K-12 curriculum, standards, and the professional development needs of classroom teachers
  • Experience managing or mentoring others, with the ability to support staff in operational and interpersonal dimensions of their work
  • Strong facilitation skills across diverse audiences, including teachers and adult volunteers
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills; ability to manage multiple programs and relationships simultaneously
  • Collaborative working style with comfort operating within a defined decision-making structure
Preferred
  • Background as a K-12 classroom teacher or instructional coach
  • Experience in museum education or informal learning environments
  • Familiarity with curriculum standards alignment and program evaluation methods
  • Experience working with volunteer communities, particularly adult or senior volunteers
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in education, art, art history, museum education, or related fields. Equivalent experience is considered.
