Packaging & Crating Technician

Position Summary

The Packaging & Crating Technician is responsible for preparing completed signs and sign components for safe transportation to customers and installation sites. This position ensures every product is properly protected, packaged, labeled, and loaded to prevent damage during transit. The ideal candidate takes pride in quality workmanship, pays close attention to detail, and understands that proper packaging is the final step in delivering an exceptional product.

Essential Responsibilities

Packaging & Protection

• Inspect completed signs and components prior to packaging.
• Wrap and protect painted surfaces, acrylic faces, LED components, aluminum cabinets, steel structures, and graphics using appropriate protective materials.
• Build custom wood crates and pallets for oversized or fragile sign components.
• Secure products using foam, cardboard, shrink wrap, edge protectors, moving blankets, straps, and other protective materials.
• Ensure all packaging meets company standards for safe transportation.

Crating

• Construct wood crates, skids, and custom shipping containers for signs of various sizes.
• Measure products accurately to minimize shipping costs while providing adequate protection.
• Properly brace and secure products inside crates to eliminate movement during transport.
• Use saws, nail guns, drills, and other woodworking tools safely.

Shipping Preparation

• Label all shipments accurately with project information, destination, and handling instructions.
• Verify quantities against packing lists and project documentation.
• Photograph packaged products for shipment records.
• Stage completed shipments for loading according to delivery schedules.
• Taking photos using an IPad to customers requested specifications.

Material Handling

• Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, overhead cranes, and lifting equipment safely (as trained).
• Load and unload trucks while protecting finished products from damage.
• Maintain organized staging and shipping areas.

Quality Control

• Inspect products for damage or missing components before packaging.
• Notify supervisors of quality concerns before shipment.
• Verify that all accessories, hardware, installation drawings, and documentation accompany each shipment.

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience using hand tools and power tools.
• Ability to read tape measures accurately.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred

• Experience in commercial sign manufacturing, woodworking, shipping, or crating.
• Forklift certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Experience building custom crates or pallets.
• Knowledge of packaging methods for oversized or fragile products.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 50 pounds
• Stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work throughout an entire shift.
• Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and lifting equipment when authorized.
• Work in a manufacturing and warehouse environment with varying temperatures.
