Job Summary
Ecological Restoration Crew Leader will direct a team in maintaining and restoring forests, prairies, wetlands, and other plant communities. This position provides a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable leadership and communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Directing field crews and work closely with project managers to ensure site goals are met
- Directing prescribed burns and help create formal burn plans
- Helping create seasonal management plans for high priority sites
- Communicating project information and delegating tasks to team members
- Assisting in training new technicians in proper management techniques and plant identification
- Applying advanced knowledge of native and invasive plant species to decide proper control methods in various ecosystems
- Deciding proper chemical, application method, and rate for each site.
- Chemical mixing, handling, and applications to control invasive species via backpack application, wicking, and ATV spraying
- Assisting with prescribed burn activities including, but not limited to; burn preparations, handling burn equipment, maintaining a strong line of communication during a burn, and implementing safe burn practices
- Operating brush clearing equipment safely including minor power equipment such as weed whips, mowers, and chainsaws
Requirements
- At least 2-3 years of experience in restoration fieldwork
- College student or recent graduate studying in the field of Environmental Science, Ecology, Geology, or related field is preferred
- Advanced knowledge of Midwest/Chicagoland natural communities, flora, and fauna
- Have or are willing to obtain National Wildlife Fire Coordinating Group S130/S190/S290 coursework certification
- Have or are willing to obtain an Illinois Pesticide Operator License
- Ability to work between 40 and 50 hours a week with occasional weekend availability preferred
- Ability to work in rough or rugged terrain over a full workday
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk for long periods
