McGhee and Company: The Roof Thatchers LLC is a family owned roof thatching company with over fifty years of experience in thatching. McGhee & Co. specializes in water reed thatching suited for the North American climate, traveling from coast to coast. We have worked at prestigious job sites throughout the country, ranging from high end and residential homes to movie sets, museums, pubs, and more. Some notable examples of our work available to the public include Jamestown Settlement, George Washington’s Mount Vernon, The Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia, and Plymouth Plantation. Master thatcher Colin McGhee has spent the past 35 years developing thatching techniques for the American climate, creating reed ridges that can last up to 30 years with minimal maintenance and thatched roofs projected to last a lifetime.
We are seeking a professional, punctual, and hardworking roof thatcher with 5 years of experience to join our crew. We are willing to sponsor applicants from outside of the United States that have demonstrated extraordinary ability in their field. This position requires specialized knowledge in thatching, particularly water reed thatching; essential responsibilities include work outdoors in varying weather conditions and frequent physical activity. This is not an apprenticeship position. Successful candidates will demonstrate competence in the following:
Job Responsibilities:
- Water reed thatching on residential, commercial, and public roofs of varying sizes.
- Installation of traditional English decorative reed, cedar shake, and metal ridges
- Travel to jobsites across the country; transportation is provided.
- Knowledge of roofing and construction safety, including proper use of ladders and scaffolding.
Qualifications:
- 5 years of apprenticeship experience underneath a Master Thatcher
- Extensive knowledge of thatching techniques, with specialty in water reed thatching
- Ability to work long physical hours in varying weather conditions; be in good physical shape.
- Ability to carry 80 lbs unassisted; ability to carry materials safely up the roof.
- Ability to use power tools preferred, but not required.
