Position Summary
The School Nutrition Assistant Manager supports the School Nutrition Manager in the daily operation of the school cafeteria. This position assists with supervising staff, ensuring compliance with federal and state meal regulations, maintaining food safety standards, and supporting financial accountability. The Assistant Manager helps ensure that nutritious, appealing, and reimbursable meals are prepared and served efficiently in a positive and student-focused environment.
Leadership & Staff Support
- Assist in supervising, training, and supporting cafeteria staff.
- Help develop daily work schedules and assign tasks as directed by the Manager.
- Model professionalism, teamwork, and customer service standards.
- Serve as acting Manager in the Manager’s absence.
Food Production & Meal Compliance
- Assist in daily meal preparation according to approved menus and standardized recipes.
- Ensure proper portion control and adherence to USDA meal pattern requirements.
- Support compliance with Offer vs. Serve regulations and reimbursable meal guidelines.
- Monitor food quality, presentation, and service efficiency.
Financial & Inventory Support
- Assist with maintaining accurate production records and documentation.
- Support inventory control and proper food storage procedures.
- Help monitor food usage to minimize waste and control costs.
- Assist with point-of-sale system oversight as needed.
Food Safety & Sanitation
- Ensure compliance with HACCP procedures and local health department standards.
- Conduct and document required temperature checks.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen environment.
- Reinforce proper food handling and sanitation practices among staff.
Customer Service & School Relations
- Promote a welcoming cafeteria environment for students and staff.
- Support school nutrition promotions and special events.
- Communicate effectively with the Manager and school administration.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 2 years food service experience preferred.
- Prior supervisory or lead experience preferred.
- Knowledge of USDA school meal regulations preferred.
- ServSafe Certification required (or ability to obtain within designated timeframe).
- Basic computer skills required (email, production records, POS systems).
Physical and Cognitive Requirements
Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Stand for six continuous hours.
- Stoop, squat, kneel, and bend for cleaning and food preparation tasks.
- Lift and carry up to 30 pounds from shoulder level to overhead.
- Perform repetitive hand and wrist motions.
- Work in hot, humid kitchen environments.
- Work with cleaning chemicals following safety guidelines.
- Maintain high standards of personal cleanliness and sanitation.
- Follow oral and written directions accurately.
