Detention Officer

Job Summary

Join our dedicated team as a Detention Center Officer, responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and order of the detention facility. In this role, you will supervise and monitor detainees, enforce facility rules and regulations, conduct security checks, and respond to incidents as they arise. The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. This position plays an important role in ensuring a safe, secure, and orderly environment for detainees, staff, and visitors while supporting the facility’s daily operations.

Duties

• Monitor detainee activities and movements throughout the facility, including through direct observation and CCTV surveillance systems.
• Enforce facility rules, policies, and procedures consistently and professionally to maintain safety, security, and order.
• Conduct routine security checks and inspections of housing units, common areas, and facility equipment.
• Respond promptly to emergencies, disturbances, and other incidents, using appropriate de-escalation techniques and following established procedures.
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of detainee activities, incidents, rule violations, and other required information.
• Conduct detainee counts, searches, and inspections in accordance with facility policies and security procedures.
• Escort and supervise detainees during movement within the facility and during authorized transports, as assigned.
• Assist with booking, intake, release, and other detention-related procedures as needed.
• Observe and report unusual behavior, potential security concerns, medical issues, and other situations requiring staff attention.
• Provide assistance during emergencies, including administering first aid or CPR when trained and authorized, and notifying appropriate medical or emergency personnel.
• Communicate effectively with fellow officers, supervisors, medical personnel, and other authorized individuals to support daily operations.
• Treat detainees with fairness, respect, and professionalism while maintaining appropriate boundaries and enforcing facility standards.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, with additional education or relevant experience preferred.
• Prior experience in detention, corrections, law enforcement, security, military service, or a related field is preferred.
• Ability to understand and follow facility policies, security procedures, and established instructions.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare accurate incident reports and maintain records.
• Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately in stressful or potentially confrontational situations.
• Ability to communicate professionally with detainees, coworkers, supervisors, and members of the public.
• Familiarity with security equipment, including CCTV surveillance and alarm systems, is preferred.
• Ability to recognize potential safety and security risks and report concerns promptly.
• Ability to meet the physical and job-related requirements of the position, including standing, walking, and responding to emergencies as needed.
• Willingness to complete required training and maintain applicable certifications, including first aid and CPR, as required by the facility.
