What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family Law Paralegal position at McCormack and McCormack?
NOTE - prior family law paralegal experience is required for this position. Applicants with no prior family law paralegal experience will NOT be considered.
We are looking to add a new family law paralegal to our growing law firm. We currently have four attorneys, three paralegals, a receptionist and an office manager. Caseload at the firm is primarily criminal defense (military, state and federal), with boutique personal injury and a growing family law component . This position is for a family law paralegal, so at least two years of prior Virginia family law paralegal experience is required. Applicants with less than two years of prior Virginia family law paralegal experience will not be considered. Due to our heavy focus on clients who are active duty and retired military, prior military experience is preferred. This position, while primarily a family law position, will also handle criminal defense paralegal duties as well. Salary commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support to our attorneys
- Effectively and professionally communicate with witnesses, clients, colleagues and court/clerk staff
- Greet visitors
- Answer phone calls, take notes/messages and redirect calls when appropriate
- Prepare and submit (mail or electronically) correspondence to courts, clerks, opposing counsel, commonwealth attorneys offices, etc.
- Collection of legal fees from clients
- Facilitate the meeting of deadlines by observing and maintaining attorney calendars, and provide timely reminders
- Prepare and maintain client files. Includes tabbing sections/documents, scanning documents into electronic file.
- Draft motions and other court filings for attorney review/submission
Skills/Requirements
- Family law paralegal: 2 years (required)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs: Word, Excel, Outlook in particular
- Outstanding time-management and typing skills
- Ability to work independently and without direction on initial tasks when opening files and throughout case
- Ability to multitask in high-stress, fast-paced environment is critical
- Team player with positive attitude
- High school diploma
Preferred Candidates Will Have:
- Prior military experience
- Bilingual (Spanish fluency)
Pay: $45,000.00 - $57,500.00 per year
