What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Nurse at McCarthy Teszler (2026-2027) position at McCarthy-Teszler School?

QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Nurse (Graduate of a four-year program) or (Graduate of a two-year-program) CPR Certification.

 

REPORTS TO: Principal and Lead Nurse

 

JOB GOAL: Assist the District by using clinical knowledge, judgment, and nursing interventions. Uphold professional standards, adhere to the State Nurse Practice Act and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing.Work collaboratively with medical personnel, RN supervisor, school personnel, and family, to manage student health conditions.

                                         

                                                         PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBLITIES     

  • Provides nursing interventions for health management as ordered by healthcare provider(s) such as but not limited to: Medication administration, Diabetes management, Trach managment, Seizure managment, PEG - tube feedings and management.                           
  • Follows medical and individualized healthcare plan as outlined by healthcare provider /RN and provides follow up on health problems
  • Provides in-service training to staff
  • Utilizes nursing software program for nursing documentation
  • Participates in nursing staff development programs as necessary for training and certifications
  • Monitors student immunization record and ensures compliance (unsure if applicable)
  • Assists in the provision of an effective school health room as needed
  • Assists with breakfast /lunch programs and meal planning.
  • Assists in crisis intervention for the safety of all students and staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the princpal and/or Lead Nurse.
  • Works with others in a cooperative manner.                                                                             

TERM: 220 days

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Physical Requirements: Requires work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis.

 

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether like or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

 

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisor.

 

 Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of documents. Must be able to speak with poise, voice control and confidence and to articulate information to others.

 

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in oral, written or diagrammatic form; to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information and the ability to comprehend and implement basic machinery functions. 

 

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with persons of varying educational and cultural backgrounds.

 

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to determine percentages and decimals, to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.

 

 Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information. 

 

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using automated office equipment and communications machinery.

 

 Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items including computer keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. 

 

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

 

 Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline. The worker is subject to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job. 

 

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to hear and understand communications through a telephone.

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, policies and procedures of Spartanburg School District Seven pertaining to specific duties of the School Nurse. Is knowledgeable in the standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.

 

Has knowledge of the organization of the district and of related departments and agencies. Has the ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.

 

Can perform duties effectively and professionally in an environment in which discrimination and other public issues are constant concerns. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has good organizational, technical and human relations skills. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. 

 

Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal and external entities with whom the position interacts. 

 

Quantity of Work: Performs described Essential Functions and related assignments efficiently and effectively to produce quantity of work which consistently meets established standards and expectations. 

 

Dependability: Assumes responsibility for completing assigned work. Completes assigned work within deadlines in accordance with directives, policy, standards and prescribed procedures. Maintains accountability for assigned responsibilities in the technical, human and conceptual areas. 

 

Attendance: Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and leave requests.

Safety and Housekeeping: Adheres to all established safety and housekeeping standards. Ensures such standards are not violated.
