JOB SUMMARY: Under supervision of a Licensed Medical Technologist prepares patients for and performs laboratory test as requested. Obtains adult and pediatric samples of blood and other bodily fluids for testing. Logs and distributes samples according to policy. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under supervision of a Licensed Medical Technologist, obtains specimens for laboratory testing.
- Properly identifies patients and transports them as required.
- Instructs and prepares the patient for the laboratory procedure.
- Collects and processes specimens in compliance with established procedures.
- Performs routine and special medical laboratory tests, following established procedures.
- Performs established testing procedures for chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urine analysis, bacteria cultures, blood bank or serology tests.
- Follows quality control procedures for all tests.
- Prepares test reports and records in medical record system
- Reviews the accuracy of results with Laboratory Director
- Assists in maintaining logs, charge tickets and reports.
- Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
Maintains Supplies and equipment.
- Monitors stock levels and orders supplies as needed
- Cleans and assists with maintenance of diagnostic equipment.
- Assists with the general cleaning of the department
Requirements:
- Education – High School graduate or equivalent .
- Job Related skills –
- Ability to learn technical procedures involved in laboratory testing.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
- License, Registry or Certification – none required
- Experience –
- Prior Work Experience -
- One year experience in a medical setting preferred.
- Technical Training – Computer skills required.
- Physical and Mental Requirements -
- Position requires extended periods of sitting and standing.
- Bending, stooping and reaching may be required with Lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Transferring and lifting or supporting patients who may experience sudden weakness or inability to stand.
- Ability to hear equipment alarms and have vision to read labeling instructions and conduct tests.
- The ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instructions and directions and to instruct employees.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS
- Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potential infectious materials.
- Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
- Follows MCHD Policies and Procedures and safety guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the department management staff.
