TEACHING ARTIST REPORTS TO: Vice President - Education
FLSA: Part-Time, Non-Exempt PAY: $35 - $50 hourly rate (starting rate based on experience with aesthetic education practice)

JOB SUMMARY: McCallum Theatre continually seeks talented and highly motivated artists in dance, theater, and music to join the Theatre’s faculty of Teaching Artists (TAs). Teaching Artists facilitate inquiry-based learning experiences focused around specific works of art as part of The Aesthetic Education Program and carry out activities in partnership classrooms in schools across the Coachella Valley and at McCallum Theatre on a project basis. The Aesthetic Education Program places arts at the center of inquiry-driven learning experiences that include attendance at McCallum performances and exhibits.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design and facilitate inquiry-based in-classroom experiences at public schools that align with Aesthetic Education methodology.
• Collaborate with McCallum’s education staff and Teaching Artists and public-school educators to effectively fulfill program goals as outlined by McCallum Theatre.
• Schedule and facilitate program planning meetings with school educators and attend professional development and department meetings with McCallum Theatre staff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Mastery in one or more art forms.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in one or multiple artistic disciplines, or a related field, and/or equivalent professional experience in one or more artistic disciplines.
• Availability to take on project-based work during the academic school year in the Coachella Valley.
• A willingness to learn and facilitate workshops within the established practice/methodology of McCallum’s Aesthetic Education Program.
• A keen interest in working with children and adults, facilitating meaningful engagements with specific works of art and the ability to bring joy and energy into a learning experience.
• Strong organizational and project management skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with students and educators with a special interest in the art of questioning: conscious, deliberate, focused.
• Possession of a current driver’s license with access to a vehicle for traveling to and from school sites.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Preferred Qualifications Experience with inquiry-based learning is a plus but not necessary. McCallum Theatre Education provides basic and advanced training in aesthetic education and offers mentorships by experienced faculty members. Ideal candidates for a TA position are open to constructive feedback and willing to try and apply new information, actions, tools and strategies with the ability to self-reflect and self-correct and receive input from others.

Work Environment This job operates in a professional, non-profit performing arts theatre and local public schools. This role operates within the theatre as well as the exterior grounds of the facility. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must possess strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer, keyboard, tools and equipment. Incumbents in this classification sit, bend, stoop and reach. Ability to lift 10 pounds is necessary for moving materials when necessary. Candidates must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.
