Director of Finance
The Director of Finance is a senior leader responsible for overseeing the firm’s accounting, financial reporting, and strategic financial management functions. This individual ensures accurate and compliant financial operations within the Accounting Seed (Salesforce) platform, while leading the AR, AP, and Staff Accountant teams. The Director of Finance provides insight-driven analysis to support firm leadership and ensures compliance with GAAP, trust accounting regulations, and law firm best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Oversight
- Direct, mentor, and supervise the AR, AP, and Staff Accountant teams.
- Oversee all aspects of the firm’s monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Manage the Accounting Seed financial system, ensuring data accuracy and control integrity.
- Establish and maintain firm-wide accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Financial Strategy & Analysis
- Develop and maintain the firm’s annual operating budget and cash flow forecasts.
- Provide financial reporting and analysis to executive leadership and partners.
- Evaluate and enhance financial processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Partner with firm management to analyze profitability by client, matter, and practice group.
Accounting Management
- Ensure compliance with trust accounting regulations, IOLTA rules, and ethical standards.
- Oversee WIP management, billing accuracy, and revenue recognition in Accounting Seed.
- Monitor aged WIP and receivables to ensure timely billing and collections.
- Supervise application of unapplied cash and reconciliation of trust accounts.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow).
- Coordinate annual audits, tax preparation, and external reporting.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and law firm accounting principles.
- Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analyses.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Serve as the Accounting Seed system administrator, managing workflows, integrations, and reporting.
- Implement automation and reporting enhancements to improve visibility and reduce manual processes.
- Lead system training and documentation for finance and billing staff.
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (CPA or MBA preferred).
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with 3 years in a law firm or professional services firm.
- Strong understanding of trust/IOLTA accounting, WIP, and e-billing processes.
- Advanced proficiency in Accounting Seed, Salesforce, and Excel.
- Proven ability to lead accounting teams and drive process improvement.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and leadership skills.
- Deep understanding of GAAP, cash management, and compliance controls.
