Medical Courier Driver (VA Illiana Health Care System) Position Overview
The Medical Courier Driver is responsible for the safe, secure, and timely transportation of medical supplies, equipment, and materials between the VA Illiana Health Care System and its affiliated Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and Vet Centers. This role is critical to supporting uninterrupted patient care by ensuring all deliveries meet strict scheduling, handling, and compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Report daily to the VA warehouse (Building 19) by 8:00 AM to receive delivery assignments
- Pick up and transport:
- Sterile and non-sterile medical supplies
- Medical equipment (including items up to 500 lbs)
- Office supplies
- Clean and dirty linen
- Deliver materials to VA clinics including:
- Peoria CBOC
- Bloomington CBOC
- Springfield CBOC
- Mattoon CBOC
- Decatur CBOC
- Follow the daily/weekly delivery schedule and ensure all deliveries are completed within required timeframes
- Maintain chain-of-custody and ensure all items remain sealed and secure during transport
- Obtain and document proof of delivery signatures at each stop
- Return all required materials (including dirty linen) back to the main facility
- Communicate any delays, issues, or delivery discrepancies immediately to the VA point of contact
- Safely load, transport, and unload materials using proper handling equipment (dollies, carts, etc.)
- Ensure vehicle cleanliness, organization, and compliance with safety standards
Compliance & Safety Requirements
- Adhere to all Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) rules and federal regulations
- Follow all security procedures, including daily check-in with VA Police (Building 102)
- Maintain proper handling of medical materials (no opening of sealed containers)
- Ensure transport conditions meet environmental requirements (temperature/humidity control as applicable)
- Comply with drug-free workplace policies and all on-site restrictions
- Wear VA-issued identification badge at all times while on site
Work Schedule
- Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- No service on federal holidays (unless authorized)
- Occasional emergency or after-hours deliveries may be required
Required Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to pass background check and VA security screening
- Ability to lift, move, and transport items up to 50 lbs (with equipment support for heavier items)
- Strong time management and reliability
- Ability to follow structured routes and schedules
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in:
- Medical courier services
- Logistics or delivery operations
- Familiarity with handling medical supplies or equipment
- Experience working with government or healthcare facilities
Performance Expectations
- Maintain on-time delivery rate of 95% or higher
- Ensure zero loss or damage of transported materials
- Maintain professional conduct when interacting with VA staff
- Ensure full compliance with all contract requirements
Key Personnel Role
This position is designated as essential personnel. The contractor will provide both a primary driver and an alternate driver to ensure uninterrupted service and compliance with contract requirements.
Pay: $720.00 - $800.00 per week
