The Hospice Director of Nursing (DON) provides clinical leadership and oversight for all hospice nursing services, ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care that aligns with hospice philosophy, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards. This role is responsible for clinical operations, staff leadership, compliance, and continuous quality improvement across the hospice program.
Clinical Leadership & Oversight
· Direct and oversee all hospice clinical services, including RN Case Managers, LPNs, aides, and interdisciplinary team members
· Ensure delivery of safe, compassionate, and compliant end-of-life care
· Serve as a clinical resource for complex patient care, symptom management, and family support
· Participate in and lead interdisciplinary team (IDT) meetings
Regulatory Compliance & Quality
· Ensure compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation, state regulations, accreditation standards, and agency policies
· Lead survey readiness efforts and manage audits, surveys, and plans of correction
· Oversee clinical documentation standards and accuracy
· Monitor quality metrics, patient outcomes, and satisfaction scores
Staff Management & Development
· Recruit, train, mentor, and retain nursing staff
· Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and corrective action as needed
· Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and compassionate care
· Support onboarding and ongoing clinical education
Qualifications
Required:
· Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license
· Minimum of 3–5 years of hospice experience
· Prior nursing leadership or management experience
· Strong knowledge of hospice regulations and interdisciplinary care
· Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Preferred:
· Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
· Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) or willingness to obtain
· Experience leading surveys and regulatory compliance efforts
Physical & Work Requirements
· Ability to travel locally to patient homes, offices, and facilities
