What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sheriff Clerk position at Maury County Government?
This is responsible administrative and technical work assisting with the storage and dissemination of legal records and evidence for the Maury County Sheriff’s Department. Activities associated with the job include filing and re-filing arrest, offence and pawn ticket reports, pulling reports for officer’s use in court and copying court dockets. Additional activities include logging and storing evidence in an appropriate manner, adding evidence to case files as necessary and ensuring the proper receipt and return of all legal documents and evidence. The incumbent also assists with a variety of clerical and administrative duties when required. Job related duties require knowledge of the practices and techniques of law enforcement and corrections operations, good organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills, considerable knowledge of legal proceedings and documents and some experience working in law enforcement operations. Job performance is evaluated by the Sheriff Office Manager through review of the level of administrative and clerical support provided to the department, knowledge of law enforcement standards and procedures, accuracy and thoroughness of completed work and organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills. Job related activities are also subject to TBI audits.
Graduation from an accredited four year high school supplemented with additional course work in office administration, data processing or related field; experience working with the public preferably in a law enforcement setting; strong organizational and decision making skills; considerable knowledge of law enforcement operations and judicial processes; considerable experience working with computer hardware and software applications; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following critical knowledge, abilities and skills:
- Considerable knowledge of computer hardware and software applications including data base management, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications.
- Considerable knowledge of specialized law enforcement computer applications and systems.
- Considerable knowledge of office administration practices and organization.
- Considerable knowledge of established practices and protocols for service of legal documents.
- Considerable knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures utilized by the Maury County Sheriff’s Department.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, local officials, law enforcement personnel and the public.
- Ability to react in a timely and appropriate manner in emergency and/or stressful situations.
- Ability to make timely and appropriate decisions in response to unusual and/or difficult situations encountered on the job.
- Ability to prioritize and organize daily, weekly and monthly activities required to meet established deadlines and reporting requirements.
- Ability to prepare correspondence, memos, reports, etc. in accordance with acceptable grammatical form and established guidelines.
- Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions.
- Skill in the use of computer software applications including proprietary, word processing, database management, spreadsheet and presentation applications.
- Skill in the use of modern office equipment including keyboards (minimum of 60 words per minute), FAX machines, copiers, scanner, calculators, and multi-line phone.
Necessary Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid Drivers License and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.
- All Sheriff Department personnel are required to maintain the highest standards of integrity, honesty and ethical behavior and conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner at all times whether or not they are performing job related duties.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Certification by a licensed physician designated by the agency as physically capable of performing necessary duties.
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Can not have been convicted or plead guilty, or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances.
- Can not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
