What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Environmental Planner position at Maul Foster & Alongi?
Staff Environmental Planner
Maul Foster & Alongi, Inc. (MFA) is hiring a Staff Environmental Planner to join our thoughtful, collaborative team. If you're curious about how environmental policy and land use shape the places we live, work, and play, and want to be part of the team making that happen, we'd love to hear from you.
As a Staff Environmental Planner, you will...
have the opportunity to support a wide range of projects, from permitting strategies and regulatory research to environmental review. You'll work closely with project managers and technical staff across disciplines, gaining exposure to everything from NEPA/SEPA processes to shoreline and growth management regulations. In this role, you'll contribute to meaningful, real-world work that connects policy with impact. One day, you might help draft permit applications or write sections of environmental review documents; the next, you could be researching local and state regulations, organizing deliverables, or participating in client and agency meetings. Throughout it all, you'll collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other planners while building your skills, growing your confidence, and deepening your understanding of how interdisciplinary teams solve complex challenges.
To thrive in this role, you must have...
- A bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Natural Resources, or a related field.
- 2 years of relevant planning, permitting, or related experience
- Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- An understanding of or eagerness to learn about how land use, policy, and environmental regulations influence projects.
- A strong sense of organization, problem solving abilities, and a collaborative work style.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Suite; familiarity with GIS or permitting tools is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications (not required)
- Experience with NEPA/SEPA. Shoreline permitting, or Oregon land use laws.
- Interest in pursuing AICP certification.
