Overview
The Pipe Layer is responsible for installing water mains, sanitary sewer lines, and storm drainage systems in accordance with project plans, specifications, and safety standards. This position involves working in trenches, around heavy equipment, and in varying weather conditions typical of Metro Atlanta construction projects.
Duties
- Lay, align, and install underground piping for water, sewer, and storm drain systems
- Install pipe materials including PVC, ductile iron, concrete, HDPE, and CMP
- Set grade, slope, and elevation using laser levels, string lines, or grade rods
- Prepare trench bottoms with proper bedding materials
- Assist with trench boxes, shoring, and excavation safety procedures
- Cut, fit, join, and seal pipe sections using appropriate tools and methods
- Install manholes, catch basins, valves, hydrants, and related structures
- Backfill and compact trenches according to specifications
- Work closely with equipment operators, foremen, and laborers
- Follow all OSHA, company, and site-specific safety requirements
- Maintain tools and ensure a clean, organized job site
Requirements
- Previous experience as a pipe layer or underground utility worker
- Knowledge of water, sewer, and storm drain construction methods
- Ability to read and understand grades
- Experience working in trenches and around heavy equipment
- Strong understanding of job site safety practices
- Physical ability to lift heavy materials and work in outdoor conditions
- 2 years of pipe laying or underground utility experience
- Trenching and shoring safety training
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to work efficiently as part of a crew
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $14.25 - $24.50 per hour
