Freelance Design Director

MATTE is seeking a Freelance Design Director for a two-month engagement to elevate the creative quality, technical refinement, and design excellence across active campaign, content, and experiential projects. This role is hands-on, collaborative, and focused on strengthening our design output and team processes during a high-volume period.

Term Dates: 12/8- 2/8/2026 [excludes 12/24, 12/25, 1/1)

Location: New York, New York

Scope of Work:

• Provide both hands-on design work and top-line design direction on priority projects.
• Participate in design reviews and ensure all deliverables meet MATTE's quality and craft standards.
• Produce design assets, mockups, visual explorations, and production-ready files as needed.
• Improve workflows for file prep, technical delivery, and overall design consistency.
• Collaborate with Creative Directors, Producers, and project leads to align design with broader creative goals.
• Offer mentorship and support to designers; identify quick wins for team/process improvements.

• Weekly design oversight on priority projects
• Feedback and direction on all assigned deliverables
• Recommendations for improving design process and technical quality
  
  

Qualifications:

• 12 years experience in a senior creative leadership role at an agency or creative studio, ideally with a focus on campaign, content, and experiential.
• Strong operational capabilities, with experience managing creative workflows and cross-functional collaboration.
• A track record of winning and delivering big business, driving successful pitches, and managing client relationships at the executive level.
• Exceptional creative vision, with an ability to push boundaries and deliver work that challenges industry norms and inspires audiences.
• Strong leadership and team development skills, with a passion for mentoring and empowering creative talent.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of clearly articulating creative concepts and strategies to clients and internal teams.
• A deep understanding of the creative landscape, with a pulse on emerging trends and technologies.
  
  

Compensation: $15,000/month for two months
