General Statement of Job
Under general supervision, plans, organizes, and presents instruction in Automotive Service Technology courses that prepare students for postsecondary education and careers in the automotive industry. Creates instructional environments that develop students’ technical knowledge, academic skills, and employability traits while promoting safe, hands-on learning.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teaches the North Carolina Standard Course of Study/Essential Standards for Automotive Service Technology.
- Provides instruction aligned with district-approved CTE curriculum, combining classroom learning with lab/shop-based experiences.
- Develops and implements instructional materials and activities that prepare students for industry-recognized credentials such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications.
- Teaches students how to diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicles using proper techniques, tools, and safety procedures.
- Ensures safe use and maintenance of automotive shop equipment, tools, and materials in accordance with OSHA and industry safety standards.
- Promotes employability skills including teamwork, problem-solving, customer service, and professionalism.
- Assesses student progress in technical skills, knowledge, and work habits; maintains accurate records of student performance.
- Provides career exploration opportunities and guidance on pathways in automotive technology, advanced training, and workforce entry.
- Communicates effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress and program expectations.
- Collaborates with colleagues, CTE coordinators, and industry partners to enhance program quality and student learning opportunities.
- Participates in school-wide supervision, faculty committees, and CTE-related student organizations when appropriate.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of automotive systems including brakes, engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and preventative maintenance.
- Ability to teach and model safe shop practices and proper use of diagnostic tools and repair equipment.
- Skilled in assessment, data analysis, and instructional planning.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and industry representatives.
- Ability to integrate technology and industry-standard software/equipment into instruction.
- Ability to establish and maintain a safe, engaging, and productive lab/shop learning environment.
- Adaptability to respond to student needs and manage instructional time effectively.
- Experience with Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and collaborative planning is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and demonstrate automotive repair tasks.
- Must have the ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds and operate automotive equipment.
- Must possess visual acuity to read diagnostic tools, technical manuals, and perform precision repair tasks.
Training and Experience
- Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina teaching license in Automotive Service Technology or related CTE area.
- Minimum of Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and industry experience.
- Industry-recognized certifications (such as ASE) will be requested.
- Experience in automotive repair and maintenance in professional settings is strongly preferred.
Salary: Based on North Carolina Teacher’s Salary Schedule (link) and prorated for part-time status.
