This Terminal Operations Superintendent oversees all CVS and Terminal Operations to ensure cargo is moved safely and efficiently in a manner that meets productivity, cost, and schedule objectives. May be assigned to CVS, CY, or Proc. Team, or other related departments, to provide support and relief coverage during peak operations and relief coverage to maintain safety, productivity, and efficiency.

About The Role
This Terminal Operations Superintendent oversees all CVS and Terminal Operations to ensure cargo is moved safely and efficiently in a manner that meets productivity, cost, and schedule objectives. May be assigned to CVS, CY, or Proc. Team, or other related departments, to provide support and relief coverage during peak operations and relief coverage to maintain safety, productivity, and efficiency.
What You’ll Do
- Manage and direct terminal activities in Honolulu to ensure efficient receipt and delivery of cargo to ensure freight is available when the customers want it. Communicate effectively with other departments to meet operational demands.
- Understand and administer the collective bargaining agreements for labor and supervisor. Provide consistent, fair, and impartial disciplinary action and promotion recommendations in accordance with the agreements. Adjust grievances (up to the 2nd Step) and resolve disputes as needed.
- Continuously monitor the work area to ensure compliance to Company, State, Federal, and Maritime safety regulations in order to maintain a safe working area. Respond pro-actively to accident and damage reports to recommend changes or enforce procedures including root cause analyses as needed. Pay particular attention to equipment damage and take steps to reduce damage and unsafe practices.
- Hire, train, and motivate a competent workforce. Execute training and review programs for Container Vessel Stevedoring staff to improve performance of staff and productivity. Monitor staff progress and provide feedback on performance. Enforce discipline and consistency in contract interpretation, work rules and agreements, and labor relations.
- Utilize Matson computer software programs to ensure that accurate information is obtained from and transferred to the databases to promote efficient container handling. Recommend changes to the systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the terminal operations.
- Ensure safe and efficient terminal operations that maintains vessel schedule integrity, yields productive gate turn times, permits a rapid flow of cargo and empty consist to and from the vessel, maximizes equipment accessibility and utilization, and expedites cargo for customer availability. Able to provide innovative container yard layout solutions to accommodate yard density and chassis equipment availability based on changing vessel, barge, and yard conditions.
- Familiar with hazmat shipment regulations and vessel Dangerous Cargo Manifest (DCM) computer files and documentation to ensure compliance.
You Have These Skills
- Proficiency with personal computers including Microsoft Office, and ability to learn Matson’s internal software programs (TOS/N4, SPARCS, Vinsight, GEMS, and others as appropriate).
- Possess excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to learn/understand/apply bargaining unit contracts, and supervise, train, and motivate within the unit’s workforce.
- Ability to think ahead and plan.
- Problem analysis and problem resolution at a functional level.
- Basic knowledge of applicable safety rules, and familiarity with safe workforce practices.
- Demonstrated ability to follow established work processes and work independently.
- Proven ability to prioritize work responsibilities in a fast-paced environment and redirect priorities with attention to details and deadlines.
- College degree required and higher level preferred. In-kind experience acceptable.
- Experience in operations, transportation, logistics or related field.
- Must be flexible to work all shifts.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
- Previous first-line supervisory experience and familiar with a union workforce.
