What are the responsibilities and job description for the Math Tutor position at MATHNASIUM - The Math Learning Center?
Math Tutor – Mathnasium of Basking Ridge, Chatham, Livingston, Summit & Westfield, NJ
THIS ROLE CAN BE YEAR-ROUND OR SCHOOL-YEAR — PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING
We're looking for instructors who want to grow with us beyond a single semester. Students and families get to know the instructors over time, and that familiarity is part of what makes Mathnasium work — consistency matters to the kids we serve. Whether you stay with us year-round or work the school year, step away for the summer, and return in the fall, we ask for at least 6 months of continuous commitment. Our afternoon and evening shifts fit well around a class schedule if you're a university student, or work just as well as steady, ongoing part-time hours if you're not. If you're only looking for short-term work below that 6-month commitment, this role isn't the right fit.
Every student has a math story. Help them write a better one.
At Mathnasium, we don't just teach math — we change how kids feel about it. Using our proven Mathnasium Method™, our tutors help students in grades 1–12 build real understanding, genuine confidence, and skills that last. We're hiring part-time tutors across our five New Jersey locations, and we'd love to find someone who's as excited about math as we are.
What You'll Do
- Deliver personalized instruction using the Mathnasium curriculum
- Create a warm, encouraging environment where students feel safe to struggle and succeed
- Track student progress and communicate wins and challenges to the center team
- Collaborate with center staff to make sure every student is moving forward
What We're Looking For
- Strong math skills — comfort with Algebra I is required; higher-level math is a plus
- A patient, encouraging teaching style that meets students where they are
- Reliability and a commitment to showing up consistently for your students
- Ability to commute to at least one of our five locations: Basking Ridge, Chatham, Livingston, Summit, or Westfield
- Prior tutoring or teaching experience is helpful, but not required — we train you
Schedule & Hours
- Sunday–Thursday 3:00–~7:15 pm, Saturday 10:00 am–~1:15 pm
- Minimum commitment: 2 shifts/week
- Typical weekly hours: ~10–25
- More hours available to instructors who can work across two or more locations
What We Offer
- Pay: $18–$19/hr, pay advancement based on demonstrated perfomance

- Growth: Real advancement opportunities
- Impact: The genuine satisfaction of watching a struggling student become a confident one
