What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cable Locator (Seasonal) position at Matanuska Telephone Association?
Under the direction of the Dispatch Supervisor, performs the cable locating duties of the Association.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
General locating duties:
- Use cable locate equipment to identify, locate, and mark existing cable routes for various companies, private individuals, and MTA crews as requested.
- Identify and review work location and description via computer using map-based software.
- Within Association standards and authorized limits, make minor field decisions on where and how a contractor may work around MTA cables and related equipment. All major decisions must be referred to a supervisor.
- Photograph all cable locates and add to the Locate Pictures library using defined naming conventions for efficient retrieval.
- Report condition of MTA plant labeling, tagging, and other identification related to locating.
- Report variances between MTA maps and actual plant.
Other duties performed:
- Inspect assigned vehicles and other equipment to determine possible repairs, maintenance, inventory, and other action to be taken. (Lights, tires, fluid levels, etc.)
- Performs plant verification and other related general tasks involving the Assignment section, when cable locating duties allow.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Ability to meet standards for proper care and use of equipment. Reports defective equipment.
- Ability to pass employment physical.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in a concise, effective manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with MTA employees and contractors.
- Ability to establish and maintain good relations with subscribers and the public as required.
- Ability to use a computer and related software.
- Ability to accurately sketch and record field notes.
