The Team
The expense team is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the ledgers for all expense accounts. Where we don’t directly control the expenses, we partner with others to validate the amounts and understand any changes. As a team we are accountable for leases, fixed and intangible assets, inventory accounts, impairments, intercompany management fee agreements, financial exhibits, footnotes, quarterly expense commentaries for both GAAP and STAT, and other general expense support.

You will directly contribute to the maintenance and accuracy of MassMutual’s consolidated financial statements. With support and training your actions and efforts will support our in-progress, ERP system conversion from SAP R3 to S4 Hana.

General Expense Accounting
- Record and review operating expense journal entries in accordance with GAAP
- Ensure timely and accurate expense recognition, accruals, and deferrals
- Support month‑end and quarter‑end close related to operating expenses
- Prepare and reconcile intercompany transactions and balances
- Assist with intercompany billing and settlement accounting
- Support intercompany eliminations and ensure proper documentation
- Perform balance sheet and P&L account reconciliations
- Assist with execution and evidence support for key controls
- Support internal and external audit requests as needed
- Assist in the preparation of standard accounting reports and schedules
- Maintain accurate supporting documentation and workpapers
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and standardization
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Business Administration with completion of core coursework in financial accounting and accounting principles.
- Ability to support monthly, quarterly and annual close processes which might require extended hours and weekends
- Basic understanding of GAAP and general ledger accounting
- Familiarity with expense recognition, accruals, and reconciliations
- Understanding of debit/credit mechanics
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to multi-tasking skills and adapt to change
- Demonstrate accountability and commitment
- Regular huddles with the Expense Accounting Team
