Role Description
We are seeking an experienced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operator to safely and efficiently operate HDD equipment for underground utility installation projects. The ideal candidate has strong field experience, understands utility locating and bore planning, and works well with hydrovac, locator, and support crews to complete projects on schedule and without incident.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate HDD drilling equipment to install underground utilities (fiber, gas, water, electric, conduit)
- Read and interpret bore plans, utility maps, and job specifications
- Set up, operate, and maintain HDD rigs and support equipment
- Coordinate closely with hydrovac crews for potholing and daylighting
- Monitor bore path, depth, and alignment using locating equipment
- Identify and avoid existing underground utilities
- Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance
- Follow all safety procedures, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and company policies
- Communicate effectively with foremen, locators, and project managers
- Assist with jobsite setup, cleanup, and material handling as needed
- Maintain accurate job documentation and production reports
Qualifications
- 2 years of HDD operating experience
- Strong understanding of underground utility construction
- Experience working with hydrovac excavation support
- Ability to read bore profiles, utility locates, and job plans
- Knowledge of safe digging practices and underground damage prevention
- Valid driver’s license (CDL a plus)
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical jobsite tasks
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
