The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. We are dedicated to educating and advocating for the physicians of Massachusetts and patients locally and nationally. A leadership voice in health care, the MMS contributes physician and patient perspectives to influence health-related legislation at the state and federal levels, works in support of public health, provides expert advice on physician practice management, and addresses issues of physician well-being. Under the auspices of NEJM Group, the MMS extends our mission globally by advancing medical knowledge from research to patient care through the New England Journal of Medicine, NEJM Evidence, NEJM AI, NEJM Catalyst, NEJM Journal Watch, and through our accredited and comprehensive continuing medical education programs.

The world has changed, and so has the way we work. The MMS has adopted a flexible work model that allows most employees to choose where they work – at home, onsite in our Waltham office, or a combination of the two – based on their preferences and our business needs. Because what matters is the work we do, not where we do it.

The Associate Editor serves as part of a flexible, multifunctional team charged with editing and producing NEJM Clinician and other clinically focused products. They edit content for brevity, clarity, and accuracy; they ensure that content meets standards for editorial style. The Associate Editor may write or produce summaries and other short pieces as well as headlines, blurbs, and other copy. Also assists in curating and deploying products in all formats.

  • Edit content (text, graphics, and multimedia) for NEJM Clinician, Clinical Updates, Conference Updates, and other products to ensure that standards of brevity, clarity, and overall quality are met. Review source materials independently and fact-check all references to those materials. Coordinate with graphics/illustration as needed. Work with physician editors to perfect content before moving on to production.

2. Ensure that NEJM Clinician and other products consistently meet standards for editorial style, voice, and tone.

  • Write or produce original content as needed. Examples may include: first drafts of Journal Watch summaries for physician editors to review and iterate on; Clinical Conversations and other video segments; items in Conference Updates; and headlines, blurbs, and other “incidental” content that becomes part of the published product.

4. Participate in preparation of content features, including NEJM Clinician weekly editions, email alerts, and carousels, as well as Clinical Updates issues and Conference Updates emails. Responsibilities may include interacting with physician editors, graphics/illustration, and other NEJM Group editorial teams; loading and proofing content in our editorial tools; and coordinating with production to ensure timely deployment.

  • May help coordinate an editorial portfolio (e.g., Guideline Watch, short-form entry points to NEJM Group content) for NEJM Clinician.
  • Performs QA, production, or administrative tasks to support the team as needed.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree and a minimum of 3 years’ experience creating or editing content, preferably for a medical audience, is preferred.
  • Must have a solid command of English usage, at least basic familiarity with medical, scientific, and technical terms, and some comfort level with databases and web-based content tools.
  • Some familiarity with creating and producing audio, video, and graphic content, and knowledge of current publishing technology (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Riverside), is preferred.
  • Experience as part of a multifunctional team is helpful; a flexible, cooperative approach, good interpersonal skills, and commitment to quality and timeliness are essential.

Compensation

The target base pay range for this role is between $60,000 and $75,000. Salary is commensurate with skills, qualifications, and experience.
