What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Laboratory Technician position at Massachusetts General Hospital?
About the Company
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Lab Technician II to join a dynamic microbiome research program focused on the gut microbiome and its role in human health and disease. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge studies of anaerobic gut bacteria, host–microbe interactions, and the microbial mechanisms that influence inflammation, metabolism, and colonization resistance. The lab integrates microbial cultivation, genomics, and host biology to answer important questions in human disease. The position offers strong opportunities for hands-on training, technical growth, and close mentorship in anaerobic microbiology, sequencing workflows, and translational microbiome research within a highly collaborative environment.
About the Role
The ideal candidate is curious, organized, and enthusiastic about hands-on microbiology research. This role is well suited for someone eager to build technical expertise, take ownership of projects, contribute to experimental design and execution, and grow as part of a fast-paced, team-oriented research group. The technician will have opportunities to present work at lab meetings and contribute to manuscripts and scientific projects.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute experiments involving bacterial isolation, anaerobic culturing, microbial physiology, metagenomics, and genome sequencing.
- Isolate, culture, and maintain gut bacterial strains using anaerobic techniques central to microbiome research.
- Apply molecular biology methods including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, and sequencing library preparation.
- Support functional studies in bacterial and host cell systems and help advance ongoing research projects.
- Optimize and troubleshoot protocols and maintain well-organized and accurate experimental records.
- Collaborate closely with lab members in a multidisciplinary research environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or a related field plus 2 years of post-graduate research experience, or a Master’s degree plus 1 year of research experience.
Required Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with microbiology techniques, including bacterial isolation, culturing, and growth assays.
- Experience with anaerobic bacteria or anaerobic culture systems is strongly preferred.
- Experience with molecular biology methods such as PCR and DNA/RNA extraction; sequencing or genomics experience is a plus.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Skills
