Job Title:                           Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, Paramedic                        

Status/FLSA Status:        Non-Exempt

Reports to:                        Emergency Services Director

Location:                           Mason District Hospital, Havana, IL

 Primary Function:

The Emergency Medical Technician-Basic and Paramedic shall be responsible for prehospital patient care, as described herein. The Paramedic shall be the senior crew member and shall be responsible for providing care to all patients who require advanced life support (ALS).

Essential Job Functions

  1. Reports on time for the assigned shift at the assigned location.
  2. Performs daily checks of assigned ambulance. Deficiencies shall be immediately reported to the assigned leader and the Director of the Department.
  3.  Operates an ambulance in a safe and knowledgeable manner, in accordance with the laws of the State of Illinois.
  4. Performs complete patient assessments, carefully evaluates all signs and symptoms, and calmly reports the finding to Medical Control (Call into recorded line within Mason District Hospital Emergency Room).
  5. Completes patient registration into the ED EMR system in a professional and timely manner.
  6. Provides emergency care according to established protocols, policies, and procedures.  Follows Mason District Hospital Policies and Procedures.
  7.  Performs vital signs, assisting other staff with triage and upon request by staff, while still performing within their scope of practice and licensure.
  8. Maintains control of a scene until turned over to other authorities; maintains adequate communications with all agencies/ parties involved in the incident.
  9. Understands the departmental disaster plan and can perform specific job assigned; knows their role in the plan.
  10. Following a prehospital call, as expediently as possible, cleans the ambulance as needed, restocks supplies used and returns the ambulance to service.
  11. Maintains proper records of care given on the appropriate forms. Also completes the billing process by entering patient information and charges into the hospital computer system.
  12. Understands radio/cell phone procedure and effective communication methods according to the guidelines set forth by SAMIC, IDPH, and the FCC.
  13. Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication skills with patients, staff, and other personnel. 
  1. Understands and uses the lines of authority with requests or grievances. In cases of sexual or racial harassment, any step in the grievance procedure may be disregarded, in the affected employee feels that the person answering for management is guilty of the alleged discriminatory act or acts.   
  2. Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
  3. Attends departmental and continuing education meetings and appropriate hospital in services. Attends outside educational programs when feasible, to improve knowledge and skills. Documents and certificates of continuing education shall be turned in for recording in departmental records.
  4. Maintains a professional appearance with good grooming and hygiene, in accordance with hospital standards and the EMS uniform policy.
  5. Is aware of own limitations and seeks appropriate assistance as needed.
  6. The responsibilities listed are not all-inclusive; other duties/activities may be required or assigned.

 Qualifications:

  1.  Possess and maintains a current license as an Emergency Medical Technician- Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic with the Illinois Department of Health.
  1.  Maintain current BLS (EMT-B), ACLS, PALS, PHTLS or ITLS (EMT I & P). 

     3. Possess and maintain a current, valid Illinois Driver’s License. There cannot be any suspensions,  revocations, convictions for reckless driving, speeding of above twelve (12) MPH over the speed limit within the past three (3) years, or convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, within the past five (5) years.
 
     4. At the time of employment, present a driving record from the Secretary of State and as required thereafter.

     5.  Possess good verbal and writing skills.

 Physical Demands/Work Environment:

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 Physical demands for this position include the ability to regularly sit, use hands and fingers, talk and hear.  This position requires standing, walking, reaching, crouching, stooping/kneeling.  The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and or patients.  Required use of tools or equipment is essential.  Work is typically performed in an office but maybe within the Emergency Room or at an emergency scene and may expos the employee to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery, contagious or infectious agents.   Vision requirements for this position include close vision including and must be able to distinguish between shades of color and utilize sense of smell.
