What are the responsibilities and job description for the County Park Ranger position at Mason County, Michigan?
The part-time ranger will work under the Ranger/Supervisor and be responsible for various tasks associated with campground operations. This position is classified as a seasonal position and will likely continue from early May until mid-October. The employee will generally work 16-24 hours a week, including some evenings and weekends. The starting wage will be $15.00 per hour.
Typical Job Functions:
The employee may be called upon to do any or all of the following job functions. These examples do not include all the duties in which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1. Register campers, assign spaces, collect money, issue receipts, distribute Campground Rules to campers and instruct campers on proper hookup procedures.
2. Clean restroom facilities at least twice per day, and check bathrooms throughout the day so that they remain in satisfactory condition and have adequate supplies. This also includes the picnic area restrooms.
3. Mow grass in the campground and the picnic area, equipment provided and maintained by the campground.
4. Clean fire pits at least once per week, more frequently as needed.
5. Check ice machine and order as needed.
6. Put out reservation cards on sites for upcoming week, should be done Sunday afternoon.
7. Check schedule for pavilion rental and make sure pavilion is clean and ready, Place sign as to rental at 9:00A when picnic area is opened on Saturday morning.
8. Must be computer literate and able to learn and use campground software to maintain camping records.
9. Supervise the campers as to following the rules and regulations of the park as established by the Mason County parks & Recreation Commission. For disciplinary problems involving children the employee will handle this by talking to the parents of the children regarding the incident. In the event the child is in danger of hurting themselves or someone else the incident will be handled in a professional manner at that time and once the threat of danger in gone, the child's parents will be immediately notified.
10. For violations of the Campground rules campers will be issued warnings by the employee; these warnings must be documented as to time & violation. For three or more repeated violations the employee will notify the Ranger/Supervisor. If the situation warrants the employee will call 911 and ask for an officer to come and handle the situation. The employee is expected to handle the situation in a professional manner and issue warnings before calling 911 unless the situation warrants an officer on site immediately. The Ranger/Supervisor will evaluate the documentation and then take this to the Parks Commission for review and recommendation. The Parks Commission is the only body that can ban someone from the campground.
11. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
1. Valid Michigan Drivers License
2. Ability to perform manual labor under all types of weather and other conditions.
3. Ability to work well with the general public.
4. Ability to understand and follow written & verbal instructions.
Specifications:
1. Minimum reasoning ability- Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
