Director of Nursing/ Float Nurse

Start Date July 1, 2027 for the 26-27 School Year

Position Summary:

The Director of Nursing/Float Nurse provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the district's health services department. This role ensures that all students receive high-quality medical care and support to achieve academic success while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local health regulations. As the floating school nurse you will perform, or will work with other nurses in performing, the daily operation of the school health offices. The floating school nurse will be assigned to cover nursing absences or to the school with greatest need for support. 

The Director reports to the Assistant Superintendent or designee.

Qualifications:

  • The Director of Nursing/Float Nurse must have a valid nursing license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  (M.G.L. c 71, s. 53)
  • Master's degree minimum; advanced degree preferred-from an accredited college or university
  • Valid license/certification as a Supervisor/Director in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Ten years of experience in public education; experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity preferred; 
  • Strong interpersonal, program development, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, bilingual fluency is preferred 
  • Ability to work collaboratively

Terms of Employment: 

 

Unit B - 215 working days, 180 student days, and an additional 35 days to be scheduled with advance approval from the Assistant Superintendent 

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of all school health programs, grades PK–12.  
  • Ensure all health programs comply with federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and procedures and current standards of the Nursing Practice Act and the MDPH, and that they are correctly implemented throughout the District
  • Supervise, evaluate, and support nursing staff in clinical practices and professional growth.  
  • Conduct regular staff meetings to communicate priorities, review progress, and foster collaboration.  

Program Coordination & Student Health

  • Support nursing staff in developing and aligning health protocols and assessments for all students.  
  • Update health manuals and medical emergency protocols annually to reflect current standards.  
  • Collaborate with district and building leadership (SBLT/DBLT) to align health services with the district’s strategic priorities.  
  • Respond promptly and respectfully to parent inquiries related to student health needs. 
  • Complete/submit the Field Trip and Epinephrine Delegation applications in a timely manner
  • Develop school health services PLC, and early release agendas—in collaboration with all school nurses
  • Oversee, collaborate, review and update with District school nurses regarding school health services policies and procedures, programing, and website
  • Maintain and update, as needed, job descriptions for school nurses and for the school physician
  • Interview, orient, and mentor school nurse substitutes, with approval of and communication with the building principal and/or Human Resources 
  • Obtain substitute school nurse/health office coverage for each building, with approval of and communication with the building principal, on an as-needed basis
  • Complete and submit the monthly and end-of-the-year Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) School Health Services reports to MDPH and the MPS Administration/School Committee.
  • Monitor and conduct the administrator responsibilities, maintenance, and reports related to the SNAP health office electronic medical record

Budget & Grants Management

  • Develop and manage the health services operating budget, ensuring expenditure control and accurate entry of requisitions in MUNIS.  
  • Oversee financial management of health-related grants and related accounts.  
  • Recommend policies and budgetary adjustments based on regulatory updates and program needs.  

Community & Agency Partnerships

  • Serve as a liaison to the Mashpee community, local healthcare providers, and state health agencies.  
  • Consult and collaborate with DESE, DPH, and other stakeholders to continuously improve programming.  
  • Represent Mashpee Public Schools on boards and committees related to school health and safety.  
  • Coordinate and arrange for student nurses through CCCC and UMASS Boston in compliance with existing contracts, and communicate said arrangements in advance to the building principal

Professional Growth & District Collaboration

  • Stay current on developments, legislation, and best practices in school nursing and share relevant updates district-wide.  
  • Engage in professional learning and attend appropriate meetings and conferences.  
  • Attend district leadership and School Committee meetings as required.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.  

Evaluation Performance will be evaluated by the Assistant Superintendent in accordance with the Massachusetts Educator Evaluation System.
