Position Summary
The Bartender is responsible for delivering exceptional hospitality while serving as an ambassador for Marzae Cellar Provisions. This position focuses on creating an outstanding guest experience while maintaining an organized, efficient, and compliant bar operation.
As an urban winery, our beverage program is wine-forward, complemented by a curated selection of local beer, simple cocktails, and non-alcoholic offerings. The ideal candidate is passionate about hospitality, eager to learn, and excited to make wine approachable through engaging, knowledgeable service.
Reports to: General Manager and/or Front of House Lead
Core ResponsibilitiesGuest Service
- Provide warm, attentive, knowledgeable hospitality to every guest.
- Prepare beverages for: Bar Seating Lounge Area General Dining Area
- Serve all guests seated at the bar/chef's counter.
- Guide guests through the wine list and menu, offering thoughtful recommendations and pairings.
- Translate technical wine knowledge into approachable, engaging conversations.
- Maintain an inviting, clean, and organized bar throughout service.
- Anticipate guest needs and resolve concerns professionally.
Bartending
- Preparing beverages accurately and consistently.
- Following standardized recipes and presentation guidelines.
- Monitoring inventory levels and communicating shortages.
- Restocking wines, beer, spirits, mixers, garnishes, glassware, and supplies.
- Maintaining draft systems and bar equipment according to company procedures.
- Assisting with inventory counts and receiving deliveries as needed.
Service Support
- Assist servers and food runners with delivering food and beverages when necessary.
- Support retail sales, including bottled wine, merchandise, and specialty provisions.
- Complete opening, closing, and side work assignments.
- Maintain cleanliness of all guest-facing and back-of-house service areas.
- Assist with event setup and breakdown when scheduled.
Retail Area
- Assist FOH team and customers as needed with retail area (Wine Provisions To-Go)
- Keep the retail area clean, organized, aesthetically pleasing, and easily shoppable.
- Guide customers on choosing which wines and pantry items will work best for their preferences.
Opening & Closing
Opening duties include:
- Stocking all wines, beer, spirits, mixers, garnishes, and supplies.
- Preparing syrups, juices, garnishes, and batch cocktails as needed.
- Polishing glassware.
- Setting up POS terminals and cash drawers.
- Ensuring the bar is fully prepared for service.
Closing duties include:
- Cleaning and sanitizing all bar surfaces and equipment.
- Completing side work and restocking.
- Reconciling cash drawer (when applicable).
- Securing alcohol inventory.
- Completing nightly cleaning checklists.
- Preparing the space for the following day's service.
Beverage Program & Service Model
Marzae is primarily a wine bar featuring:
- Marzae wines by the glass and bottle
- Local craft beer
- Simple cocktails and mocktails*
*typically two to three ingredients, many will be batched and/or served on draft
Bar/Chef's Counter | Full-service
Serviced directly by the bartender.
Lounge | Full-service
Serviced by servers, with beverages prepared by the bartender.
General Seating | Counter-service
Guests order food and beverages at the bar. Food and beverages are delivered by servers and runners, while tables are maintained and cleared throughout service.

Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Previous bartending experience (wine-focused hospitality strongly preferred)
- Experience in restaurants, wine bars, breweries, tasting rooms, or hospitality venues
- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
- Comfortable working independently
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Basic math and cash-handling skills
- Experience using POS systems (Toast preferred)
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events
- Previous wine certifications are appreciated but not required.
Product Knowledge & Training
Successful candidates should be excited to continually expand their knowledge of:
- New England New York Wine regions and varietals
- Food and wine pairing
- Winery production methods
Marzae encourages continuous education through regular staff tastings, wine education, and harvest intern opportunities.. Employees interested in pursuing formal wine education (such as WSET or Court of Master Sommeliers coursework) are encouraged to discuss professional development opportunities with management.
Required Certifications & Physical Requirements
All employees must maintain current certifications including:
- TIPS Certification
- ServSafe Food Handler Certification (or equivalent)
Copies of all certifications must remain current and on file.
Food Safety & Compliance
Employees are expected to:
- Follow all food safety and sanitation standards.
- Understand HACCP principles and safe food handling procedures.
- Comply with all Massachusetts alcohol service laws.
- Follow all company sanitation, cleaning, and safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized workstation throughout every shift.
- Immediately report any safety or maintenance concerns.
Physical Requirements
This position regularly requires employees to:
- Stand and walk for up to 8–10 hours.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Move cases of wine and beer.
- Reach, bend, kneel, and climb step stools.
- Work in refrigerated storage areas when necessary.
- Safely operate bar equipment and glassware.

Compensation & BenefitsCompensation
- Guaranteed minimum earnings of $25/hour.
- Approximately 30-40 hours per week preferred.
- Overtime paid in accordance with applicable federal and Massachusetts law.
- Tip pool distributed based on hours worked and Massachusetts regulations.
- Payroll is processed bi-weekly.
Service Charges
- 15% built-in service charge.
- 3% kitchen support fee applied to food sales to support equitable back-of-house compensation.
