Position Title: Instructional Designer and Technology Specialist

Department: Academic Affairs

Title of Immediate Supervisor: Assistant Dean for Academic Success

Funded Term / Work Cycle: 12-month, full-time

Expected Daily Work Hours: 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Expected Weekly Work Schedule: Monday–Friday

Pay Grade: 7S

Expected Salary Range: $47,000

Position Purpose

The Instructional Designer and Technology Specialist advances the College’s teaching and learning mission by supporting the effective and innovative use of effective pedagogies and instructional technologies across all modalities. This role contributes to the development of technology-enhanced learning environments, assists with digital learning strategy, and helps faculty integrate tools that improve instructional effectiveness and student learning outcomes.

 

SUMMARY

The Instructional Designer and Technology Specialist provides faculty support, training, and consultation for instructional technologies, assists with LMS and learning troubleshooting tools, develops training resources, and helps implement new learning technologies. The role supports daily instructional technology operations, collaborates with academic departments, and contributes to technology pilots, assessments, and improvements.

 

Education and Experience required to ensure success in this position:

 

Education  

  • Bachelor's degree required in instructional design, educational technology, or similar relevant field from an accredited college or university

 

Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in instructional technology or instructional design.
  • Experience using best practices in designing and implementing online courses in a variety of formats, including asynchronous, hybrid, and hy-flex modalities

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Leadership and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate technology into course design, assignments, and learning activities across online, hybrid, and face-to-face formats.
  • Serve as a technology consultant for academic departments, providing guidance on digital tools that enhance teaching and learning.
  • Coordinate with Information Technology Services to support system updates, troubleshooting, and classroom technology improvements.
  • Participate in campus committees, working groups, or initiatives related to instructional innovation.
  • Provide expertise and recommendations during planning for technology-enhanced learning spaces and digital learning strategy.

 

Data, Technology, and Compliance

  • Collaborate with IT staff to maintain and support the College’s learning management system (LMS), learning tools, and integrations with related platforms.
  • Support faculty and staff in using instructional technologies such as lecture capture tools, classroom AV systems, multimedia tools, and digital assessment platforms.
  • Ensure digital materials and instructional platforms meet accessibility standards and federal compliance expectations.
  • Track platform usage, workshop attendance, faculty adoption, and other data relevant to assessment and strategic planning.
  • Assist with reporting requirements for the Title III grant and other internal initiatives.

 

Stakeholder and Institutional Support

  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs staff to provide faculty and staff with timely support for instructional technology issues, including troubleshooting, consultation, and resource development.
  • Collaborate with IT staff to respond to tickets or requests related to LMS operation, classroom technologies, digital media tools, and instructional systems.
  • Partner with Academic Affairs, advising, and student support offices to ensure a consistent and effective digital learning experience.
  • Support student users as needed in navigating learning platforms and tools.

 

Operations and Technical Oversight

  • Develop and deliver workshops, tutorials, online guides, and training materials related to instructional technologies.
  • Maintain the instructional technology knowledge base, help documentation, and resource libraries.
  • Assist with the design, configuration, and maintenance of technology-rich classrooms, labs, and learning environments.
  • Support pilots, testing, and phased rollouts of new instructional tools and platforms.
  • Work with vendors on technical support, configuration assistance, or product updates.

 

Fiscal Oversight

  • No independent budget authority.
  • Provide recommendations for purchasing instructional software, equipment, or improvements to technology-enhanced learning spaces.

 

Strategic Planning and Sustainability

  • Research emerging instructional technologies and make recommendations for adoption, expansion, or discontinuation.
  • Provide feedback that strengthens digital learning strategies and long-term sustainability of instructional technology initiatives.
  • Contribute to planning and documentation that ensures continuity and scalability of digital learning support.

NOTE: Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty, and students.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of instructional design principles and best practices for technology-enhanced learning.
  • Proficiency with LMS platforms and learning tools
  • Knowledge of digital media tools, instructional software, and classroom AV systems.
  • Strong communication, training, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and guide users through solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and collaborate across campus units.
  • Skill in evaluating new technologies and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to support faculty with varying levels of technology experience.

 

License, Certification, or Registration Necessary:

  • None required.
    Preferred but optional: certifications in instructional technology, LMS administration, or related areas.

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is typically performed in a professional office environment and includes:

  • Regular use of computers, phones, and standard office equipment
  • Frequent interaction with faculty, staff, and instructional support teams
  • Occasional movement between campus buildings for meetings, consultations, or faculty support
  • Managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting
  • Extended screen time for reviewing digital course materials and building online content
  • Ability to assist during workshops or faculty learning sessions (standing, presenting, moving equipment)
  • Work in both physical and digital learning environments

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods during design and development work
  • Ability to move about campus as needed for consultations or training sessions
  • Ability to lift and move up to 20 pounds (A/V equipment, training materials, or technology components)
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate office technology and instructional design tools
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically

 

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:

  • Computers and standard office equipment
  • Learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard)
  • Instructional design and accessibility software (e.g., Articulate, Adobe products, multimedia tools)
  • Communication technologies including email, Teams, and collaboration platforms
  • A/V equipment used during training sessions, workshops, or instructional support
