The Maryland Department of Transportation The Secretary’s Office (MDOT TSO) is seeking a Facility Maintenance Technician II. This is an Interview and Hire position that is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below for this position.

Nature of Work:The Facility Maintenance Technician II is responsible for supporting the Chief of the Office of Safety, Security, and Facilities (OSSF). This is the experienced level of maintenance and construction work to utilize the tools, operate the motorized equipment, and perform manual tasks essential to the upkeep and appearance of a facility. This work requires physical exertion, which is performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDOT building. On some assignments, the incumbent may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds and may also be required to work at high elevations or perform their job in cramped quarters in buildings or underground. The Facility Maintenance Technician II may provide guidance, instruction, and assistance to other employees.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Enhancing operational efficiency of the MDOT Headquarters building and associated systems
  • Servicing the building with maintenance inspection and repair
  • Upkeeping and grounds maintenance
  • Arranging furniture and repairs
  • Setting up cubicles and cubical alterations
  • Preparing conference rooms and events
  • Repairing drywall
  • Preparing and painting interior and exterior of offices and building
  • Servicing the mail room and currier service
  • Maintaining fleet management

The incumbent receives general supervision from a Facility Maintenance Supervisor. Employees in this class are considered essential employees and are subject to call-in 24 hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous and safe operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shift work, to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: One (1) year of experience in construction, facilities maintenance or skilled trades work, including the operation of heavy motorized equipment.

Notes:

U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses & Certifications

1. Employees applying for the Facility Maintenance Technician II classification must possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in the state of Maryland (depending on the type of equipment operated). Applicants must list the license number and date of expiration date on the application. Employees must maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for continued employment. This includes obtaining and maintaining a valid US DOT Medical Card (or MVA-issued waiver) every two years. Note: Employees must meet all Department of Budget and Management policies required for operation of State-owned vehicles to continue employment.

2. Candidates and promotional employees hired into the Facility Maintenance Technician II level must satisfy the employing administration’s training and certification program requirements during the probationary period.

3. Employees in the Facility Maintenance Technician II classification must satisfy the employing administration’s training and certification program requirements to be eligible for advancement to higher levels.

4. Employees seeking transfer to another administration must satisfy that administration’s training and certification program requirements.

Special Requirements:

1. Applicants may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform maintenance on high structures and in cramped quarters in tunnels, underground and in buildings.

2. Employees must be willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous and safe operation of a facility. Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link at their own expense for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.

3. Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing, pass hazardous materials training and have the ability to wear a respirator.

4. Employees in these classifications are considered "Essential Employees" and may be required to sign and agree to all policies and procedures relating to "Essential Employee" status.

5. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

6. Employees in this classifications are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
