The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Structures (OOS) is currently recruiting for a Bridge Inspection Team Leader (Transportation Engineering Technician V) in Baltimore City. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. Nature of Work: Federal regulations require that the state of Maryland bridges be inspected every two (2) years, and the State Highway Administration Office of Structures is directly responsible for these inspections. The Bridge Inspection Program manages condition inspection ratings of major structures, including movable bridges, box culverts, pipes, bulkheads, retaining walls, small structures, and other miscellaneous structures on the State Highway System. The number of these structures statewide exceeds 5000, with a dollar value in the billions and a yearly repair budget of approximately 16 million dollars. This position is a Team Leader on a bridge inspection team and is responsible for scheduling and performing inspections on all types of structures. The Bridge Inspection Team Leader must be able to supervise and guide the inspectors assigned to the team, and handle any administrative duties related to personnel. This is an advanced technical-level position that requires a variety of complex engineering tasks and decisions.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
Selective Qualification: Four (4) years of bridge inspection experience.
Preferred Qualification:
The ideal candidate should possess the following:
Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
Selective Qualification: Four (4) years of bridge inspection experience.
- A Selective Qualification is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective Qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability).
Preferred Qualification:
The ideal candidate should possess the following:
- Advanced bridge inspection certifications.
- Knowledge of bridge inspection program used (InspecTech), Lane Closure Permit (LCP) program, and Inspector Daily Report (IDR).
Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
2. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in either Engineering, Construction Management or Surveying or Surveying Technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the eight-year experience requirement.
