  • Position Summary
    • Ensures all actions taken, while carrying out responsibilities, support patient centered care. Prepares, dispenses, and monitors prescribed medication therapy and other pharmaceuticals for patient care according to current professional standards and practices. Monitors and evaluates drug usage and other related work as required.
  • Position Responsibilities

      • Assures availability of drug supplies through routine materials management or emergency procurement.
      • Adheres to and promotes departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control procedures.
      • Oversees and/or performs the maintenance of all records, ordering, receiving and stocking of narcotics and controlled substances within the hospital.
      • Assists in coordinating materials management, drug formulary management and writing departmental policies and procedures.
      • Insures proper storage and rotation of pharmaceutical inventory and supplies.
      • Support and participate in group purchasing, especially with HEC and Premier.
      • Demonstrates the ability to organize the work day to optimize output by using sound time management techniques.
      • Identifies cost savings within the confines of the pharmacy department and looks for different and/or better ways to purchase pharmaceuticals or supplies.
      • Exhibits and promotes a cooperative team spirit.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.
      • Awareness of Joint Commission and CMS standards related to Medication management and pharmaceutical services.
      • Helps to assure departmental compliance with regulatory agencies.
      • Dispenses medications daily consistent in accuracy with regards to patient, quantity, labeling and product by physician order.
      • Integrates knowledge and experience to optimize drug efficacy, to decrease or avoid drug toxicity or adverse drug reactions and to decrease drug therapy costs.
      • Functions as a medication information service. Information on all medications is available to physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team of the Medical Center and other organizations in the service area. Individual therapy questions are researched with oral or written replies.
      • Provides drug usage evaluation services and educational information to assure safe, effective and efficient use of medications used in the Medical Center. This would include Quality Management activities, pharmacokinetic dosing services and drug use consultations.
      • Supervises and/or prepares all sterile IV admixtures including, but not limited to large volume parenterals, hyperalimenation, chemotherapy, epidurals, small volume parenterals, irrigation solutions and ophthalmic preparations.
      • Analyzes, interprets and prepares quality assurance reports in assigned areas.
      • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, workshops, in service meetings and journal clubs. Innovates and assists implementation of progressive pharmacy practices.
      • Outpatient dispensing is performed to provide continuity of care to patients seen in ER and those being discharged from acute care.
      • Assists in orienting and training of pharmacy technicians, pharmacist interns and nursing staff.
      • Checks all drug storage areas periodically for proper drug storage conditions, labeling, expiration dating and usage to assure availability of safe, usable medications.
      • Oversees technical personnel to coordinate efforts for efficiency and safety and to maintain communication with director regarding same.
  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
    • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
      • Graduation from a College of Pharmacy with a B.S. in Pharmacy or a PharmD.
      • Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacist with a current State of Iowa license or registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacist-intern while pursuing licensure to practice pharmacy in the state of Iowa within 120 days of hire.
      • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
