UAS Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC) & Operations Specialist– Utility UAS Operations

Compensation: $50–$65 per hour (commensurate with experience)
Position Summary
We are seeking a professional and experienced Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC) with a strong background in utility‐based unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations and operations planning and with experience in operational planning. This role supports critical inspection, assessment, and response activities in and around active utility infrastructure throughout Southern California.
This position is designed for professional UAS pilots who are comfortable operating in complex, regulated environments, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and taking full ownership of mission safety, compliance, and execution—from pre‐flight planning through post‐flight data handling. The position will operate with both small and large UAS and a private pilot certificate is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC) for utility inspection and sensor‐based UAS missions, maintaining full responsibility for flight safety, regulatory compliance, and operational decision‐making
- Plan and execute UAS missions in proximity to utility assets, critical infrastructure, and controlled or sensitive airspace
- Conduct comprehensive pre‐flight risk assessments, airspace coordination, and post‐flight documentation and maintenance
- Manage mission data workflows, including sensor data handling and post-flight data processing
- Work with large/heavy lift UAS in development of new utility-based operations
- Coordinate directly with local governments, airports, military installations, and the FAA to obtain authorizations and support mission requirements
- Respond to emergency and on‐call utility incidents, including after‐hours, weekend, and holiday operations as required
- Represent the UAS program professionally when interacting with internal teams, field crews, and external agencies
- Agricultural drone spraying Part 137 experience is desired
Required Qualifications
- FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate (current and in good standing)
- Demonstrated professional UAS experience in utility, infrastructure, or industrial inspection environments
- Flight experience with DJI M300 series aircraft
- Proven ability to operate safely and effectively in complex airspace and high‐risk operational settings
- Strong understanding of UAS regulations, waivers, LAANC authorizations, and operational risk management
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to pass pre‐employment drug screening and background check
- Private Pilot Certificate or pilot ground school completion is preferred
Physical & Field Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs of UAS and support equipment
- Capability to traverse uneven terrain and outdoor environments for extended periods
- Comfortable working full days outdoors in varying weather conditions
Schedule & Travel Expectations
- Full-time position with primary schedule is Monday–Friday, with flexibility required
- Frequent travel around San Diego County
- Availability for on‐call, emergency response, weekend, and holiday operations as utility conditions require
