POSITION SUMMARY
The Student Nurse Extern (SNE), under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN), will assist in the provision of care to the patient to provide safe, efficient, and timely high-quality care. The position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of MLK Community Healthcare (MLKCH). It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the MLKCH Core Values. The employee shall support Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital’s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Obtains verbal report from the patient’s primary nurse to include information regarding the patient’s identified care needs, treatment plans, and appropriate activities as discussed during the RN handoff communication with the SNE. Asks questions for clarification if needed.
2. Reviews Electronic Health Record (EHR) for any additional patient information regarding necessary care elements such as patients' dietary restrictions, food allergies, intake and output needs, and isolation precautions.
3. Reports changes in patient condition to the primary RN such as falls, skin integrity issues, critical lab values, clinical tasks.
4. Records vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate, and any complaints of pain as directed by primary RN, reporting all abnormal vital signs directly to the primary RN.
5. Performs blood glucose point of care testing as ordered, reporting all abnormal results to the RN.
6. Assists patients to perform activities of daily living, such as getting out of bed, hygiene, dressing, eating, using the toilet, standing, walking, or exercising and providing oral care. Hygiene includes documentation of bed bath, sitz bath, oral care, back care/rub, etc., and reports signs of skin breakdown to the RN.
7. Measures and records food and liquid intake and reports changes to the primary RN.
8. Measures and records urinary and fecal output and reports changes to the primary RN.
9. Performs and documents perineal/indwelling urinary catheter care.
10. Diabetes Management: Identifies signs and symptoms of hyper- and hypoglycemia. On direction, follows hypoglycemia protocol.
11. Nutrition: Observes food and liquid intake and documents percentage eaten appropriately. Reports nausea/vomiting/loss of appetite to the primary RN. Delivers, sets up, and collects meal trays on time. Assists patients with feeding as needed.
12. Demonstrates technique for applying, removing and care of anti-embolic stockings.
13. Ensures weighing and zeroing of beds prior to patient admission using standard linen guidelines for bedmaking.
14. Demonstrates technique for use of Incentive Spirometer, assists patient with every usage.
15. Pressure Injury Prevention and Fall Prevention measures are in place with documentation.
a. Turns or repositions the patient every 2 hours.
b. Ensures appropriate mattress and pressure reducing devices are in use to minimize skin injury.
c. Performs purposeful hourly rounding per hospital standard
16. Maintains a safe patient environment.
17. Promptly answers patient call signals, signal lights, bells, or intercom systems to determine patients' needs.
18. Offers consistent help and visible assistance to team members when needed.
19. Applies principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients, families, and with staff.
20. Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the MLKCH Values of Caring - Collaboration, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.
21. Attends all SNI Program didactic sessions and completes shadowing opportunities as defined in the SNI Program Curriculum.
22. Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A. Education
Final year of an accredited BSN school or university. Proof of having earned a grade point average of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Must be enrolled and remain enrolled in nursing school to be in this role. Proof of enrollment will be required throughout the time in the position.
B. Qualifications/Experience
Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation, but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
An understanding of human anatomy, basic medical terminology, and rehabilitation principles is desired
