Job Description
The Cost Manager will be responsible for monitoring, reviewing, and controlling project costs across assigned construction projects. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with internal teams, subcontractors, and external stakeholders to ensure cost accuracy, timely reporting, and overall financial control.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Review and analyze subcontractor change orders (COs) for accuracy and completeness.
- Estimate and negotiate change orders throughout the construction lifecycle.
- Perform basic-level quantity take-offs from construction drawings and conduct drawing overlays to verify scope and quantity changes.
- Reconcile changes and prepare written comments on subcontractor submissions, including executive summaries of changes.
- Collaborate with subcontractors to obtain, validate, and negotiate pricing for change orders.
- Compile, verify, and distribute accurate cost documentation in support of project deliverables.
- Complete timely and accurate cost checking, valuation, and cost impact assessments.
- Manage contingency and commitment tracking logs to ensure cost control and accountability.
- Perform quantity surveying, cost controls, and change management activities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure cost auditing and valuation work is managed effectively and that a robust process for cost validation is in place.
- Carry out the production of monthly cost reports for presentation to the Project Manager.
- Assist in preparing and distributing monthly owner billings in coordination with the Project Manager.
- Acquire and maintain in-depth knowledge of all contract documents and subcontractor scopes of work.
- Ensure that final accounts are negotiated and agreed upon in a timely manner.
- Work professionally with Project Managers, Owners, Architects, Government Agencies, and Subcontractors.
- Interact professionally with owners and clearly, intelligently discuss change orders, ensuring transparency and alignment.
- Assist the team in meeting critical deadlines and contribute as an active and reliable team member.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel with strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Minimum of 1 year of professional experience in the U.S. construction industry (cost management, estimating, or related field).
- Experience reviewing change orders (COs) and working with subcontractor pricing.
- General knowledge of construction project processes and documentation.
- Familiarity with project management software such as Prolog or Expedition (similar platforms may be acceptable).
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Willingness to learn company procedures and actively contribute as part of the team.
- Prior experience supporting cost management on commercial construction projects.
