School Health Professional

Job Overview

The Martin County School District is seeking a compassionate and qualified School Health Professional to support the health and well-being of students across our school community. This position is responsible for ensuring student health needs are addressed and maintaining health procedures, records, and reports in accordance with Florida statutes, regulations, and district policies.

In this role, you will provide first aid, administer and document medications, perform health assessments and nursing procedures, and help identify and manage suspected infectious illnesses. You will collaborate with school and district personnel, students, families, and the Department of Health to promote a safe and healthy school environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess student health concerns and provide appropriate first aid and nursing care in accordance with established clinic policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Administer and document medications provided to students, following approved guidelines and procedures.
• Perform health assessments using appropriate clinical equipment, including stethoscopes, thermometers, otoscopes, blood pressure monitors, and glucometers.
• Perform authorized healthcare procedures based on orders from a licensed physician or legally authorized designee, including injectable and emergency medications, with appropriate documentation.
• Identify and manage individuals with suspected infectious illnesses and help prevent the spread of contagious diseases through appropriate exclusion measures and health education.
• Report required health information to the school principal and follow applicable school health policies and Department of Health guidelines.
• Communicate effectively with students, families, school staff, district personnel, and the Department of Health regarding student health concerns.
• Collect basic objective and subjective health information and perform nursing activities safely, accurately, and according to established standards.
• Maintain organized, accurate, and up-to-date health records and filing systems.
• Establish and communicate clear behavioral expectations for students and staff in the school clinic.
• Follow direction, work collaboratively as a team member, and seek guidance when appropriate.
• Maintain student confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, regular attendance, and a positive team attitude.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required:

• Current Florida Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license.
• Current Health Care Provider CPR certification.
• First Aid and AED certification.
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Preferred:

• Experience in community health and/or school health programs.
• Experience in pediatrics.
• Ability to communicate in Spanish and/or Creole.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position works primarily in a school clinic, office, and/or classroom environment. Physical requirements include routine activity associated with a school healthcare setting, occasionally exerting up to 20–50 pounds of force and frequently exerting 10–15 pounds of force.

The role requires the ability to read small print, use a computer, communicate effectively in person and by telephone, manipulate small objects, and move quickly to respond to medical emergencies, including bending, kneeling, and other necessary movements. Employees new to, rehired into, or transferred to this job classification are subject to physical demand testing to confirm they can meet the position's requirements.
