REPORTS TO: Maintenance Director
SUPERVISES: None
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical certification in a skilled trade preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in facility maintenance, building operations, or a related skilled trade.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices.
- Working knowledge of building systems, mechanical equipment, custodial operations, and safety regulations.
- Proficiency in recordkeeping, work order systems, and basic computer applications.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of the cultivation, pruning, spraying and trimming requirements of shrubs and trees.
- Ability to make minor repairs to lawn mowers, hose, rakes, pruners and sprayers
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to use and sharpen gardening tools
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. - Building and Systems Maintenance
- Perform skilled repairs and maintenance on building components, including doors, windows, lighting, flooring, and classroom fixtures.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor electrical, plumbing, and mechanical issues.
- Assist HVAC technicians with preventive maintenance activities and seasonal system servicing.
- Perform painting, patching, and carpentry work to maintain building interiors and exteriors in good condition.
- Preventive Maintenance and Safety Inspections
- Execute preventive maintenance schedules for building systems and equipment such as boilers, pumps, HVAC units, and safety devices.
- Conduct regular inspections of fire alarms, extinguishers, emergency lighting, and other safety systems to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Identify and report facility safety concerns, code violations, or maintenance deficiencies to the Facilities Supervisor in a timely manner.
- Custodial Operations Support
- Monitor custodial supply inventories across all district facilities to ensure adequate stock of cleaning products, paper goods, and related materials.
- Coordinate with custodial staff and vendors to replenish supplies as necessary and maintain accurate inventory records.
- Conduct scheduled walkthrough inspections of school buildings to assess overall cleanliness, sanitation, and maintenance conditions.
- Prepare and submit written reports summarizing inspection findings, noting areas for improvement or corrective action.
- Grounds and Equipment Maintenance
- Oversee the servicing and operational readiness of lawn care and grounds keeping equipment, including mowers, trimmers, and blowers.
- Ensure all grounds equipment is maintained in safe working condition and that adequate fuel supplies are available for daily operations.
- Support seasonal grounds activities, including snow removal, storm cleanup, and general landscape maintenance.
- Emergency Response and Operational Support
- Respond promptly to emergency maintenance issues such as plumbing leaks, power outages, and HVAC malfunctions to minimize disruptions to school operations.
- Provide operational support for special events, including setup and takedown of furniture and equipment.
- Assist with after-hours and weather-related facility operations as assigned.
- Safety, Documentation, and Communication
- Operate vehicles, tools, and maintenance equipment safely and in accordance with district policies and OSHA standards.
- Maintain detailed work records within the district’s maintenance management system, documenting labor time, materials used, and work completion.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including personal protective equipment (PPE) use, lockout/tagout procedures, and chemical handling requirements.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with administrators, staff, contractors, and vendors regarding maintenance and facility issues.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS: The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Facilities and Grounds Technician job classification within Martin County Schools.
Work in this classification is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and climb ladders
- Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions
- Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
- Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts

- Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arm’s length
- Operate machinery and equipment including hand tools and job specific equipment and tools, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The work is typically performed in the Maintenance Department and all MCS worksites.
Salary : $2,600 - $4,317
