POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Coos Bay School District is seeking a dynamic, tech-savvy, and motivated CTE Broadcast Journalism Teacher to lead and grow our high school radio broadcasting program. This position is responsible for teaching students the fundamentals and advanced concepts of radio operations, production, and broadcast technology. The ideal candidate will blend technical knowledge with educational expertise to prepare students for careers in broadcasting, media production, and digital communications.

 

The program operates two student-run radio stations: KMHS 1420 AM and KMHS 91.3 FM, providing hands-on, real-world broadcasting experience for students.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Valid Oregon Teaching License with appropriate CTE/ODE (Oregon Department of Education) endorsement or ability to obtain one.
  • Experience in radio broadcasting, media production, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of radio station operations, FCC requirements, and technical systems, particularly dual-station (AM/FM) environments.
  • Ability to teach and manage high school students in a hands-on, project-based learning environment.

 

Preferred:

  • Experience with Natural Music, broadcast automation software, and audio editing platforms (Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, etc.).
  • Knowledge of web development tools, mobile app deployment, and smart assistant integrations (e.g., Alexa skills).
  • Experience working with tower/transmitter systems and sports broadcasting setups.
  • Previous teaching or training experience in a secondary or postsecondary setting.

Planning & Instruction

  • Writes and utilizes short-term and long-term plans for instruction.
  • Design and deliver engaging, standards-based lessons in radio broadcasting, including audio production, journalism, and live broadcasting.
  • Train and mentor students in the operation of broadcast equipment, troubleshooting systems, and ensuring quality on-air programming for both KMHS AM and FM stations.
  • Guide students in producing live and recorded content for radio, web, and other digital platforms.
  • Prepare students for CTE certifications and career readiness.
  • Plans activities of high quality in keeping with district-adopted goals, standards, and curriculum.
  • Plans and develops goals and objectives to meet identified student outcomes.
  • Monitors student understanding and adjusts plans based on student learning needs and styles.
  • Demonstrates skill in the selection of various teaching techniques and instructional materials conducive to student learning.
  • Differentiates instruction to accommodate diverse student abilities, learning profiles, and interests, ensuring all students access grade-level content.
  • Implements evidence-based instructional strategies within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to proactively address academic and behavioral needs.
  • Integrates literacy-based instruction across content areas to support reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills development for all students.
  • Utilizes a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and materials necessary to the lesson and/or activity, including district and state adopted curriculum.
  • Uses student performance data to guide instructional decisions, monitor progress, and inform interventions that support individual and group learning needs.
  • Promotes an inclusive learning environment by ensuring equitable access, removing barriers, and celebrating the diversity of all learners, including students with disabilities, English language learners, and those from historically underserved groups.

Student Growth & Assessment

  • Establishes classroom procedures that promote student learning and self-discipline and adds to the realization of the student’s personal potential as a worthy citizen.
  • Holds high expectations of student learning and aligns curriculum to state standards.
  • Promotes respect and empathy among students of different socioeconomic, cognitive, and cultural backgrounds.

  • Makes use of alternative assessments (when appropriate) as well as traditional assessments.

  • Maintains appropriate teacher-student relationships as outlined in the “Ethical Educator” (TSPC Division 20).
  • Follows their duties and responsibilities as set forth by the district’s Job Description.
  • Maintains regular attendance in order to preserve continuity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Principal and/or Supervisor.

Technical Operations and Industry Collaboration:

  • Work with engineering staff to support maintenance and upgrades at the radio tower site used by KMHS AM and FM.
  • Collaborate with the IT department on networking, configuring, and installing new broadcast hardware and software for sports broadcasts and daily operations.
  • Oversee and assist with the operation of Natural Music scheduling software to manage on-air content across both stations.
  • Assist with the completion and submission of FCC reports and ensure compliance with all FCC regulations and radio station operating requirements.
  • Maintain and update the training and operations manual to support continuity and professional staff assistance as needed.
  • Digital Media and Online Presence:
  • Lead the completion and launchof the radio station’s new websitemobile app, and Alexa skills, ensuring alignment with modern digital communication trends and accessibility standards.
  • Promote student-produced content through various platforms and help manage digital distribution channels.

Leadership and Program Development:

  • Support and supervise student workers, providing real-world learning opportunities in broadcasting and digital media.
  • Foster partnerships with local media, colleges, and industry professionals to enhance program relevance and student opportunities.
  • Maintain equipment, budget, and inventory for the program.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS:

In this work environment, the teaching position occasionally performs work beyond a standard 40-hour work week when workload requires. The work environments combine a standard classroom setting including standard classroom equipment (assistive technology, copier, phone, Chromebook or computer, audio/visual equipment etc.) in a standard school setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate and occasionally high depending upon student population and activities. The employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and/or physically and emotionally dysregulated students.
